KARACHI, May 4: Speakers at a memorial meeting here on Sunday paid tribute to Tipu Sultan on his 204th death anniversary.

The meeting was held under the aegis of the Anjuman Yadgaar-i-Tipu Sultan Shaheed at Bangalore Town Hall. The chief guest, former diplomat Qutubuddin Aziz, said Tipu Sultan made full use of the best education that he received in various disciplines, including military strategy and state craft.

He asked the office-bearers of the Anjuman to approach the government with a request to impart education to cadets on Tipu Sultan’s military strategy in military academies. The lives and achievements of Tipu Sultan and Salahuddin Ayubi should be included in curriculum.

In his address of welcome, the President of the Anjuman, Prof (Dr) Mohammed Ilyas, former principal of Sindh Medical College, said the objectives of the Anjuman included help to poor students and provide for treatment of such people as were unable to provide for themselves.

Underscoring the need for making collective efforts for the progress and prosperity of the country, he said the herculean task of achieving an independent country had been achieved by the Quaid-i-Azam and other leaders of the Pakistan Movement, and now it was the responsibility of the present rulers and younger generation to maintain it in a dignified manner.

Other who spoke at the meeting included the Anjuman’s patron, Brig S. A. Qasim (retd); founder principal of Happy Home School, Ms Mariam Farooqui, Prof Khawaja Qutubuddin, S. Mehmood Khawar and Izharul Hasan Haidery.

Later, the winners of different competitions held on the occasion were given away prizes. The first prizes for Urdu and English speech contests were bagged by Huma Ashfaq and Mariam Adil, respectively, of Bangalore Town Secondary School. Faiza Izhar Husain was declared the best in Naat and poem competition.
