Foreign investors exit T-bills

KARACHI: The war in the region has almost wiped out foreign investment in Pakistan’s domestic bonds, leaving little chance of recovery if the current situation prevails, said financial experts.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) data showed that foreign investors have almost left the domestic bonds, which had been their preferred choice, as returns were highest in the region and very high compared with most other countries.

A day ago, the central bank further increased the yields on Treasury Bills by up to 83 basis points to almost 12pc, making them more attractive to investors.

The SBP data showed that over 94pc of foreign investment in T-bills left the country by April 17.

Mideast war drives 94pc outflow from treasury bills

This could be a result of destabilisation due to war in the region, which is still ongoing without knowing the final outcome of this deadlock in the talks between Iran and the United States.

Threats and counter-threats between the two countries have created a broad range of uncertainties, while significant disruptions to oil and gas supplies from the region have already jeopardised fragile economies such as Pakistan’s.

The oil import bill has risen to $800m per week, up from $300m before the Middle East conflict. The war has greatly shaken confidence as evidenced by the case of lucrative domestic bonds.

From July 1 to April 17 2025-26, inflows into T-bills were $975 million, while outflows were $917 million, indicating a net investment of $58m.

Experts said it is highly encouraging that Pakistan repaid a huge amount of $3.5bn to the UAE, $1.4bn against Eurobond maturity, and allowed outflows of profits and dividends from foreign investments amounting to $1.8bn during the first nine months of FY26.

“Pakistan has re-entered the international market and raised $750m, reflecting that the confidence of foreign investors would jump with the end of the Gulf war, and we can expect large foreign investments in the post-war era,” said S.S. Iqbal, a money market expert.

He said Pakistan would be in the best position compared with other regional countries, as it has succeeded in developing good relations with all major global powers and Gulf countries.

The SBP data showed that the highest outflows from the T-bills were $291m to the UK, followed by $271m to the UAE. Other significant outflows were $218m to Bahrain and $77m to Singapore. An outflow of $32m was to the USA.

Financial experts noted that despite the highly attractive returns on domestic bonds, Chinese investors never entered the market. Instead, Pakistan is seeking to enter the Chinese financial market through a $250m Panda bond issuance.

China has been the largest foreign investor in the country for several years and is the biggest trade partner, replacing the UAE.

They said the 100bps interest rate hike to 11.5pc was a good move, as April inflation was 10.9pc. This means the increased returns on T-bills could be highly attractive to domestic investors, as they offered Rs3.8 trillion in the auction held a couple of days ago.

Oil spike threatens Pakistan’s economic growth

• Analysts say inflation may exceed 11pc, CAD could rise above $8bn
• GDP expansion may slow to 2.5-3.0pc in FY27

KARACHI: Pakistan’s inflation is likely to remain in double digits if the surge in oil prices persists amid the unresolved Middle East conflict, analysts warned, adding that rising costs and disrupted imports are already straining the country’s external position.

Topline Securities Ltd released its latest “Pakistan Strategy” report on Saturday, analysing the impact of soaring oil prices amid regional tensions and their implications for Pakistan’s economy and stock market. The brokerage said the situation is prolonged and evolving, with outcomes hinging on whether the conflict ends or a peaceful resolution is reached.

The report projected that if current conditions persist, Pakistan’s inflation over the next 12 months could average 9-10 per cent, with fourth-quarter FY26 inflation surpassing 11pc. These forecasts are based on an oil price of $100 per barrel, with every $10 increase adding roughly 50 basis points to inflation estimates. At $120 per barrel, average annual inflation could reach 10-11pc, prompting the State Bank of Pakistan to consider further policy rate hikes to protect real returns.

Rising energy costs and inflation are expected to weigh heavily on economic growth. Topline Securities lowered its GDP forecast for FY27 to 2.5-3.0pc, down from an earlier 4.0pc, reflecting a 100-120bps impact. FY26 growth is maintained at 3.5-4.0pc, in line with the central bank’s revised guidelines.

Industrial growth could fall to 1pc from 3.9pc, agriculture to 4.0pc from 4.4pc, and services to 2.8pc from 4.0pc if the conflict continues. By contrast, if tensions ease by FY27, growth could stabilise around 3.5-4.0pc.

Fiscal outlook

Analysts at Topline Securities expect the current account deficit (CAD) for FY27 to remain below $3.5 billion (0.8pc of GDP) with administrative measures. However, slippages or lax import controls could push it above $8bn (1.9pc of GDP), straining foreign exchange reserves.

The consolidated fiscal deficit for FY26 is expected to remain in the range of 4.0-4.5pc of GDP due to relief spending, slightly above the IMF target of 4.0pc. A similar range is anticipated for FY27.

A measured government response could keep FY27 currency depreciation around 5-6pc. Without intervention, supply-demand pressures could accelerate losses.

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) has suffered amid regional turmoil and rising oil prices, ranking the third worst performer globally in the January-March quarter with a 15pc decline. India and Indonesia posted larger falls of 19.4 and 19.0pc, respectively. Heavy dependence on imported energy, Pakistan imports 85pc of its requirements, is cited as a key factor. Petroleum imports are projected at $15bn for FY26, roughly 22pc of total imports.

Topline Securities recommended remaining overweight in exploration and production (E&P) firms, fertilisers, and banks, while adopting a market-weight stance on pharmaceuticals and consumer goods. Caution is advised in cyclical sectors due to potential GDP slowdown.

Imports/remittances

Non-oil imports, expected to reach $48-50bn in FY26, could threaten macroeconomic reforms if unrestrained. Historically, administrative measures have played a key role in curbing imports during crises, including FY09, FY19, FY20, and FY23. Topline Securities forecasts an 8pc fall in non-oil imports for FY27 with government intervention, alongside a 12pc decline in petroleum product consumption due to higher prices.

Remittances are projected to fall 3.5pc, reflecting a 10pc decline from the Gulf Cooperation Council region and modest growth elsewhere. Exports are expected to drop 4pc. With these assumptions, the FY27 current account deficit is estimated at $3.5bn (0.8pc of GDP).

Policy rate

The SBP raised its policy rate by 100bps to 11.5pc on April 27. If oil prices remain at $120 per barrel, further rate hikes may be necessary. The rupee-dollar exchange rate is forecast to close FY26 at Rs280-282 and FY27 at Rs294-298 (average Rs289). Persistent conflict could drive depreciation above the historic 5-6pc average.

The benchmark KSE-100 index is down 7pc year-to-date and 14pc from its January 2026 peak, with geopolitical tensions, rising oil prices, and profit-taking contributing to declines. Key sectors poised to benefit include E&Ps, fertilisers, and banks.

Domestic E&P companies could ramp up production by 500-900 mmcfd over two years, partly offsetting reliance on imported RLNG. Fertiliser companies may benefit from rising international urea prices and restored domestic margins. Banks are expected to see improved spreads due to higher interest rates.

Spirit Airlines shuts down globally

WASHINGTON: US air carriers mobilised on Saturday to help passengers and crew members stranded by the overnight shutdown of Spirit Airlines, after last-minute talks with creditors and the White House collapsed.

The budget airline known for its bright yellow planes succumbed to crushing fuel prices and announced in the early hours of Saturday that “all flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available” as it “started winding down its global operations, effective immediately.” Other carriers, including American, Delta, United, and jetBlue, leapt at the news on Saturday, offering what some dubbed “rescue fares” to those waking up with cancelled itineraries.

Some said they were increasing flights or the size of planes in and out of airports where Spirit had a significant presence.

Carriers also sought to support marooned Spirit staff — and hire them.

Several carriers encouraged now-jobless crew members to apply to their open roles.

Spirit had been in bankruptcy since August 2025 — its second in less than a year — and the White House had been considering a bailout.

“The recent material increase in oil prices and other pressures on the business have significantly impacted Spirit’s financial outlook,” the company said in a statement. “With no additional funding available to the company, Spirit had no choice but to begin this wind-down.” It has promised refunds.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy scrambled to defend the Trump administration’s position as a rescue plan never materialised.

“The president was like a dog on a bone trying to figure out a way to keep Spirit afloat,” Duffy said in a morning press conference.

Govt pushes real estate investment trusts framework reform

ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Saturday directed key institutions to undertake targeted reform workstreams to strengthen taxation, regulatory processes, and market development within the existing framework, as part of incentivising and facilitating the growth of Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs).

The minister stressed a coordinated, outcome-oriented reform approach focused on actionable steps within existing institutional frameworks. The direction came during a virtual meeting of the REITs’ focus group on Saturday.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders from the public and private sectors to deliberate on measures to strengthen the REIT framework and enhance its contribution to economic activity and capital market development. An official announcement said that the minister assigned specific review tasks to the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, REIT issuers, market participants, and the Tax Policy Office (TPO) to deliver actionable proposals in their respective domains. The discussion covered key areas central to the growth and scalability of the REIT sector.

Participants deliberated on refining the taxation framework, streamlining processes to facilitate REIT issuers, and strengthening the overall market ecosystem to enhance investor participation, particularly from retail segments. Emphasis was placed on maintaining a balanced, predictable, and investment-friendly enabling environment.

The participants noted that while the REIT market in Pakistan has made initial progress, significant potential remains to deepen its reach through targeted policy measures and improved coordination. Addressing procedural inefficiencies, ensuring clarity in regulatory requirements, and fostering alignment among stakeholders were identified as critical to unlocking this potential, it was also pointed out.

Mr Aurangzeb observed that REITs provide a structured and transparent mechanism for channelising real estate investments into productive sectors of the economy. He highlighted their role in promoting documentation and supporting the formalisation of the real estate, construction, and development sectors, as well as improving capital allocation and economic activity.

Moreover, the group discussions also focused on broadening investor participation and improving market depth. Enhancing investor awareness, strengthening confidence in REIT instruments, and ensuring efficient secondary market functioning were highlighted as key to facilitating investor entry and exit and sustaining market growth.

The meeting emphasised the need to align the REIT framework with evolving international practices while maintaining simplicity, clarity, and ease of implementation.

Participants stressed the importance of adopting pragmatic and well-calibrated measures that effectively support market development without adding unnecessary complexity.

The minister underscored the importance of continued and structured consultation to ensure that reform efforts remain responsive to market needs, grounded in practical considerations, and aligned with broader economic objectives. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering a facilitative, transparent, and predictable policy environment that encourages investment, supports innovation, and strengthens Pakistan’s capital markets.

Industry opposes Sui Southern Gas Company’s tariff hike petition

KARACHI: Business leaders have strongly opposed the Sui Southern Gas Company’s (SSGC) petition to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) seeking a substantial increase in gas prices for the next fiscal year and urged the regulator to reject the proposal in the interest of the economy and industrial sustainability.

In a statement, Businessmen Group (BMG) Chairman Zubair Motiwala and Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) President Muhammad Rehan Hanif expressed concern that the effective hike could reach 286 per cent when accumulated shortfalls of over Rs545 billion are incorporated.

They said that this would push the prescribed gas price to approximately Rs6,855 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) and raise the total revenue requirement to around Rs1.28 trillion.

They termed this demand entirely uncalled for and unjustified, noting that even on a standalone basis, the SSGC has sought a steep 121pc increase in prescribed prices to about Rs 3,935 per mmBtu, which is disproportionately higher than the 21pc rise requested by the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL).

Warns effective increase may reach 286pc with accumulated shortfalls

They emphasised that the petition effectively converts gas tariffs into a mechanism for recovering historical financial inefficiencies rather than reflecting the actual cost of service. Gas throughput has declined by 9.4pc, yet operating expenses have surged by more than 108pc, indicating serious lapses in cost control and operational efficiency.

Embedding a cumulative revenue shortfall of nearly Rs956bn into current tariffs places an unfair burden on existing consumers, particularly the industrial sector, which is already under stress.

The KCCI leadership also objected to the inclusion of Rs312bn as interest on Gas Development Surcharge (GDS) receivables, stating that this represents a financial dispute between SSGC and the federal government and should not be transferred to consumers who have already paid the surcharge.

They also rejected the inclusion of Rs16.35bn as Balochistan revenue shortfall adjustment and Rs2.3bn for LPG air mix projects, asserting that these are policy-related costs that must be borne by the government through the national budget rather than imposed on industrial consumers.

They stated that both SSGC and SNGPL must first transparently identify and address the root causes of their financial deficits rather than relying on steep tariff increases.

The core issue is the sharp decline in industrial gas consumption which has dropped by nearly 50pc due to unviable pricing. At the same time, high unaccounted-for-gas (UFG) losses, including theft, leakages and inefficiencies, particularly in the domestic segment, continue to persist at elevated levels, while domestic consumption remains largely unchanged due to heavy subsidies.

Banks favour govt papers over loans

KARACHI: Pakistan’s advance-to-deposit (ADR) ratio has been declining, and private sector lending has experienced a significant drop, according to a PwC report for the year 2025.

“Pakistan’s ADR ratio has been gradually contracting, standing at 35 per cent in June 2025, following an increase from 41pc in 2023 to 49pc in 2024,” said the report.

The latest report to March 2026 shows that the ADR has slightly improved to 38.8 per cent, but it is still well below the level required to accelerate economic growth.

“Concurrently, lending to the private sector declined to 11pc of GDP in 2024. Conversely, the investment-to-deposit ratio (IDR) has increased significantly, from 40pc in 2010 to 93pc in 2024 and reaching 100pc as of June 2025,” said the PwC report.

Investments hit Rs39.1tr, IDR at 104.3pc as private lending stays weak

However, Arif Habib’s latest report shows that the IDR jumped to 104.3pc in March 2026.

Banking deposits increased by 18.6pc compared to the last year to Rs37.5 trillion as of March 31 (March 2025: Rs31.6tr), while advances increased by 8.1pc to Rs14.6tr during the same period (March 2025: Rs13.5tr).

The highest growth was in investments in government securities, which jumped by 20.8pc to Rs39.1tr, compared with Rs32.4tr in March 2025.

This data indicated a continued trend of low private-sector lending relative to deposit growth, with a significant portion of bank funds invested in government securities rather than in loans to businesses.

It was also witnessed during the last auction of treasury bills held on Wednesday, when investors (mainly banks) came out with a huge liquidity of Rs3.8tr to invest in government papers. The 100bps rise in the SBP policy rate to 11.5pc further enhanced the appeal of treasury bills, with returns reaching as high as 12pc.

Researchers believe that the huge liquidity has no option but to invest in the government papers, as lending to the private sector has become riskier due to the recent developments in the region. The Gulf war has not only increased the cost of production, but it has also reduced the purchasing power of the general public.

The 10.9pc inflation in April and the higher cost of borrowing have further reduced any chance of possible investors taking risk. Both bankers and trade industry people feel there is a higher chance of default due to the cost of money.

Most people in trade and industry believe that this is not the right time to borrow or invest anywhere except in government papers. However, borrowing for working capital was noted during FY26; it is a short-term borrowing without a long-term target.

ISLAMABAD: Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has urged the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and the Pakistan Banks’ Association (PBA) to conduct a comprehensive review of existing frameworks, identify key gaps, and assess all relevant aspects of cyber risk management and institutional preparedness.

Chairing a virtual meeting on Saturday to strengthen cybersecurity preparedness in the financial sector, the minister further emphasised the need for close coordination among regulatory authorities, financial institutions, and technical teams to develop well-considered, actionable recommendations to strengthen the banking sector’s cybersecurity posture.

The meeting was attended by presidents and chief executive officers of commercial banks, along with their chief information security officers (CISOs). It was also attended by the SBP governor, the Pakistan Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority chairman, and the PBA chief.

An official announcement said the issue requires special attention from the government in light of recent cyber risk trends in countries such as Japan and India, where financial ecosystems have faced growing exposure to attacks on digital payment platforms and interconnected systems.

Urges coordinated action across financial sector

A detailed presentation was delivered outlining the evolving cyber threat landscape, including the growing sophistication of AI-enabled cyber tools capable of identifying vulnerabilities, developing exploits, and executing multi-stage attacks at unprecedented speed. The presentation highlighted potential exposure across digital banking channels, payment systems, and core financial infrastructure, while emphasising the need for enhanced vigilance and preparedness.

The participants were also informed about evolving international policy responses to emerging AI-driven cyber risks. It was noted that finance ministries and central banks worldwide were increasingly treating these developments as high-priority systemic concerns, engaging through coordinated high-level platforms, including the IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings and bilateral consultations with major financial institutions.

Participants observed that these developments offer valuable lessons for strengthening Pakistan’s defensive capabilities and institutional readiness. The discussion highlighted that Pakistan’s ongoing engagement on these issues was aligned with global efforts to strengthen next-generation financial infrastructure, enhance cyber resilience, and promote responsible innovation in the financial sector.

The participants deliberated on enhancing coordination between regulators, financial institutions, and other stakeholders, while strengthening governance frameworks and aligning cybersecurity policies with evolving global standards. Emphasis was placed on improving threat intelligence sharing, addressing vulnerabilities in legacy systems, and leveraging emerging technologies to strengthen detection and response capabilities.

The meeting emphasised the importance of translating policy intent into effective implementation through enhanced coordination and clearly defined institutional responsibilities. Participants agreed on the need to develop actionable measures and ensure their timely execution to safeguard Pakistan’s financial ecosystem against evolving cyber threats.

Mr Aurangzeb appreciated the active engagement of financial institutions, regulators, and technical experts, and underscored the importance of coordinated efforts to safeguard critical financial infrastructure. He emphasised that as Pakistan’s financial ecosystem continues to digitise, strengthening cyber resilience must remain a central policy priority.

IHC rejects Hubco’s petition against FBR notice

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court has dismissed a petition filed by the Hub Power Company challenging a show-cause notice issued by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), reinforcing the tax authority’s jurisdiction in the matter.

According to court documents, the petitioner company questioned the legality of the notice issued by tax authorities, arguing that the proceedings initiated against it were without lawful authority and contrary to the applicable tax framework. The petition also raised objections to the manner in which the tax demand was pursued, seeking judicial intervention to set aside the notice.

However, after examining the record and hearing arguments, the high court declined to interfere, effectively allowing the FBR to proceed in accordance with the law. The court observed that the impugned notice did not warrant constitutional intervention at this stage and that the petitioner could avail itself of alternative remedies available under tax laws.

The ruling comes against the backdrop of a broader judicial trend in which the IHC has shown restraint in tax matters, particularly where statutory remedies exist within the framework of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001.

JUI-F threatens protests over seminary raids in Balochistan

QUETTA: The Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F), Balochistan, has announced the launch of a protest movement against raids on religious seminaries across the province.

Senator Maulana Abdul Wasey, the provincial chief of the JUI-F, stated that a province-wide shutter-down strike and protest demonstrations would take place on May 6.

Addressing a press conference on Saturday, he said that on May 10, seminary students and party workers from across Balochistan would march towards Quetta. He added that JUI-F members in the provincial assembly would stage strong protests inside the Balochistan Assembly. He also announced that party chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman would address a JUI conference in Pishin on June 4.

These decisions were taken during a meeting of the JUI-F’s provincial leadership and later announced at the press conference. Opposition Leader Mir Younas Aziz Zehri, Maulana Salahuddin, Maulana Faiz Muhammad, Agha Mehmood Shah, Malik Sikandar, and others were also present.

Red line

Maulana Wasey alleged his party faced election rigging and that development funds for its members had been withheld. He said the party exercised restraint in the interest of democracy, but emphasised that seminaries were a “red line” and any raids on them would not be tolerated.

He stated that a deadline had been given to Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti to apologise for the seminary raids. However, a three-member delegation of provincial ministers met them and conveyed that the chief minister is currently abroad, requesting a postponement of the protest movement until his return.

He claimed the protest campaign would remain peaceful and that no damage to property would be allowed. He warned that JUI-F lawmakers would protest within the assembly and disrupt proceedings if necessary.

Responding to a question, the JUI-F leader said the government was given a May 2 deadline to issue an apology and withdraw the madrasa-related notification, but no practical steps had been taken to date.

He also criticised the government for passing a Societies Act mandating seminaries registration, stating that the party would not accept this under any circumstances. He added the government had failed to fulfill its commitments regarding the Mines and Minerals Act, and that a request for one week’s time was rejected during the meeting.

He added that if amendments were included in the May 5 assembly session agenda, the party would acknowledge the government’s efforts; otherwise, the planned march to Quetta on May 10 would proceed. He accused CM Bugti of violating the constitution and urged him to act prudently. In response to another query, Maulana Wasey said that under the 26th Constitutional Amendment, a seminary-related law has already been passed by the National Assembly, and it was the responsibility of provincial governments to implement it.

Opposition steps up criticism of govt over economy, press freedom

• PTI slams ‘double-digit inflation’; blames high petrol price for deepening public hardship
• Accuses rulers of hiding ‘incompetence’ behind global factors
• Achakzai warns intelligence agencies against ‘political interference’; Barrister Salman vows continued push for Imran’s release

ISLAMABAD/LAHORE: Opposition on Saturday launched a sweeping assault on the government, accusing it of failing to control rampant inflation, suppressing media freedoms and allowing intelligence agencies to overstep their constitutional role in politics.

In a multi-pronged offensive, senior leaders from Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and its allies condemned what they termed the government’s “incompetence” and authoritarian tactics.

At a press conference, National Assembly Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai issued a stark warning to the country’s intelligence agencies, while a separate statement from PTI detailed the severe economic and social pressures facing ordinary citizens.

PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram in a stamement criticised the government’s performance on several fronts, leading with its economic policies. He said double-digit inflation had surpassed official forecasts, driving up the costs of energy, transport, and essential food items.

“The public was grappling with extreme economic pressure, yet the government was attempting to hide its ‘incompetence’ behind an excuse by shifting the blame onto global conditions, which PTI strongly rejected,” Mr Akram said, arguing that neighbouring countries had managed the crisis more effectively.

“Continuous increase in petroleum prices has further intensified the inflationary pressure, making transport, electricity, wheat, vegetables, and other essential commodities unaffordable for the common man,” the statement read.

“PTI demands that the government immediately reduce the petroleum levy, control the prices of essential commodities, and take urgent measures to provide real relief to the public.”

Mr Akram also addressed the state of press freedom, citing a recent report from the global watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF). He noted the report’s finding that press freedom had reached a “critical low point globally”, a trend he said was dangerously apparent in Pakistan.

“In Pakistan as well, a dangerous rise has been observed in media pressure, censorship, and the harassment of journalists,” he said. Mr Akram described the misuse of laws to stifle criticism, pressure on media outlets, and attempts to silence journalists as “poisonous to democracy,” adding that a strong democratic system is impossible without a free press.

The PTI spokesman also condemned what he called a “selective” anti-encroachment drive in Islamabad, highlighting the Prime Minister’s decision to halt an eviction at the One Constitution Avenue complex. He criticised the policy as anti-poor, stating that “houses of the poor were being bulldozed, rendering them homeless, while the powerful remained untouched.”

Furthermore, Mr Akram targeted the Pakistan Peoples Party-led government in Sindh, dismissing its claims of creating a world-class health system as being “detached from ground realities.” He pointed to reports indicating that over 75 per cent of top-tier health management positions in the province remained vacant.

“This is not a minor administrative gap but a collapse of leadership and oversight at the highest level,” he said, noting that stalled promotions and leadership vacancies have left communities vulnerable to outbreaks of HIV, measles, dengue, and malaria.

Achakzai warns agencies

Separately, speaking at an event hosted by the Haqooq-i-Khalq Party, Mr Achakzai called on intelligence agencies to refrain from political interference.

“Politics is not their cup of tea and they must stay within their domain and do their job,” he said.

He suggested the country was heading toward internal conflict, asserting that “forces lose when people rise to get their rights.”

Mr Achakzai further alleged that the establishment was actively engineering a “minus-Imran Khan” political landscape and claimed that military officials were unduly influencing civil administration.

“The Tehreek-i-Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP) will condemn such a move and resist it at every level,” he asserted. “Genuine leadership is in jails, while people with dubious credentials are in assemblies.”

Mr Achakzai said Pakistan was undergoing a serious crisis as all state institutions had been ruined, citing that the Supreme Court had snatched a political party’s electoral symbol and Khan was denied meetings with lawyers and family.

PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja echoed these sentiments, affirming his loyalty to the party’s founder, Imran Khan, who remains incarcerated.

“Those are foolish, who think that the people of Pakistan could be suppressed and rejected,” Mr Raja said. “There is nothing more important than Imran Khan’s health and his release from unjustified incarceration.” He argued that the economic future of the nation’s farmers and poor was directly linked to Mr Khan’s freedom.

Concluding his statement, Mr Akram reaffirmed PTI’s commitment to its core causes: “PTI would continue its struggle for the release of PTI founder Imran Khan and other prisoners.”

With 19 seats empty, Lahore High Court moves to appoint more judges

• Court has 41 judges against sanctioned strength of 60
• Several law officers, advocates already interviewed as caseload mounts

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court, Justice Aalia Neelum, has initiated the process to fill long-pending vacancies in the provincial high court, as the institution continues to grapple with an increasing caseload and shortage of judges.

According to official figures, the sanctioned strength of the LHC is 60 judges; however, at present, only 41 judges — including the chief justice — are performing their duties, leaving 19 positions vacant. The shortage has significantly increased the workload on sitting judges, contributing to delays in the disposal of cases and adding pressure on the judicial system.

In an effort to address the situation, Chief Justice Neelum started consultations and interviews of prospective candidates for elevation to the bench. Sources said that a number of senior advocates and law officers have already been interviewed as part of the selection process.

Who are in the race?

The candidates who have appeared before the chief justice include Ghulam Sarwar Nihang, currently serving as prosecutor general in the federal capital; Advocate Asad Ali Bajwa; Advocate Kashif Rajwana, son of former governor Rafiq Rajwana; Barrister Zargham; and Amjad Pervaiz, who is presently serving as the Punjab advocate general. Other candidates include Barrister Usman Ghani Rashid, Syed Farhad Ali Shah (prosecutor general, Punjab), Barrister Umer Riaz, Advocate Asad Abbasi, Advocate Shireen Imran and Advocate Masroor Haider Awan, brother of Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan.

Sources further revealed that two lawyers from Bahawalpur, including Amir Ajam, were also being considered for elevation to the high court.

In addition to the names being examined by the chief justice, the Punjab Bar Council is also expected to forward a panel of nominees to the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP). Among the likely nominees are Hafiz Ansarul Haq and Additional Attorney General Munawar Iqbal Duggal.

The process of judicial appointments, however, has been facing delays due to recent constitutional and procedural developments. The JCP was expected to convene a meeting last month to consider appointments in the superior judiciary, but the meeting was postponed.

During a recent meeting of the Judicial Commission, which discussed the transfer of judges from the Islamabad High Court to other high courts, it was decided that the issue of fresh appointments would be taken up after finalisation of new rules governing the commission’s functioning.

In that meeting, three judges of the IHC — Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, Justice Babar Sattar and Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz — were transferred to different high courts, including the LHC, the PHC and the SHC, respectively. The transfers were part of a broader judicial reshuffle aimed at addressing administrative requirements across the superior judiciary.

Sources said the government had proposed that the next meeting of the JCP be convened only after finalisation of the revised rules, which are being framed in light of recent constitutional amendments. The 26th Amendment brought significant changes to the composition and functioning of the Judicial Commission, altering the balance of representation within the body. Subsequently, the 27th Constitutional Amendment introduced further changes, necessitating a fresh set of rules to regulate the appointment process.

• Two security personnel martyred during two-hour gun battle
• Separate landmine blast in Duki injures two security men

GWADAR/QUETTA: Four terrorists were killed in a security operation in Pasni of Gwadar district, while two security personnel were martyred in the ensuing gun battle, officials said on Saturday.

Official sources said security forces launched a search operation on intelligence reports about the presence of armed terrorists in the coastal tehsil of Pasni in Gwadar district.

The forces cordoned off the militants’ hideout and initiated an operation, during which the armed suspects opened fire using automatic weapons, they said. Security forces returned fire, and a heavy exchange of gunfire continued for about two hours, resulting in the killing of four terrorists, they added.

“Forces targeted the hideout of the militants and killed four armed men,” security officials said, adding that two security personnel embraced martyrdom during the clash. A clearance operation in the area was continuing till filing of this report.

Landmine blast

Meanwhile, two security men were seriously injured in a landmine explosion in the Duki area of Balochistan.

Officials said unknown individuals had planted a landmine on a road in the Taleo area of Duki. It exploded when a motorcycle hit it, injuring two security personnel. “Both security personnel, who were part of a private security company, sustained serious injuries,” a police official said.

FIA seizes 2bn Iranian rials in Karachi raid

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Saturday seized nearly 2 billion Iranian rials in a raid on an illegal currency exchange network in Karachi’s Industrial Area, arresting two men who confessed to running unauthorised forex operations, officials said.

The haul — equivalent to around half a million Pakistani rupees at open market rates — was recovered from suspects Ahmad Khan and Misbahul Haq during an operation conducted by the FIA’s State Bank Circle, according to a statement issued on Saturday.

“The suspects were caught red-handed dealing in Iranian rials and failed to provide any legal justification,” an FIA spokesperson said. Both men confessed to running an illegal currency business during initial questioning. The FIA added that the arrests had “broken the backbone” of the network, and more arrests were expected as investigators widen the probe into what they described as a “currency mafia”.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, FIA defended its decision to offload 23 passengers bound for Bahrain on May 1, calling media reports about the incident “misleading”. The passengers, all holding Pakistani passports and work visas, were stopped during routine immigration checks after giving “false and misleading” statements, the FIA said.

They all lacked foreign service agreements, officials said. “On these grounds, all 23 passengers were offloaded,” the spokesperson said.

LAHORE: State Minister and Pakistan Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (PVARA) Chairman Bilal Bin Saqib has said Pakistan is moving ahead with developing a regulatory framework for digital assets as the adoption of blockchain-based technologies continues to expand.

Addressing policymakers and experts at Leadership Summit on Blockchain and Digital Assets, hosted by the Lums Centre for Digital Assets Research, on Saturday, Mr Saqib stressed that the government must act decisively to bring the growing number of digital asset users into the formal financial system. Regulation should enable innovation while ensuring consumer protection, he added.

The state minister said that around 40 million Pakistanis are already engaged with digital assets, largely through informal platforms operating outside regulatory oversight, creating both opportunities and risks.

“The universe rewards action, not intelligence,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of timely execution in responding to rapidly evolving technological shifts.

PVARA chief says blockchain can enhance efficiency of remittance inflows

A key priority, he said, is integrating users from informal systems into the formal economy to reduce exploitation and strengthen financial inclusion.

Highlighting the economic implications, he pointed to Pakistan’s annual remittance inflows of around $38 billion, saying these could be made more efficient through blockchain-based settlement systems.

Mr Saqib also referred to the expanding freelance economy, arguing that regulatory clarity could enhance global competitiveness.

Pakistan has developed a regulatory approach for digital assets within a short timeframe, driven by institutional support and policy direction, he added. The framework, he said, will follow a risk-mitigated model, including sandbox environments to test emerging technologies.

Asset-backed tokenisation has been identified as an initial focus area, which could widen access to investment opportunities by enabling smaller-scale participation in real estate and financial instruments.

He warned that delays in regulation could deepen reliance on unregulated systems, given the scale of existing adoption. Pakistan, he added, now has an opportunity to help shape global discussions on digital finance rather than simply adopting external frameworks.

Calling for collaboration, he urged banks, technology firms, academia and regulators to work together to build capacity and develop skilled human resources.

“The biggest gap at the moment is talent,” he observed, stressing that continuous learning and institutional coordination will be essential for long-term progress.

Federal Constitutional Court rejects extra perks for former bureaucrats

• Balochistan govt’s plea relates to grant of lifetime facilities for retired officers
• Court emphasises all govt actions must be rooted in legal authority

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) has rejected a plea by the Balochistan government seeking to grant lifetime facilities to retired chief secretaries and their widows.

Justice Aamer Farooq, who headed a two-judge bench, observed that the Balochistan government’s notification was over and above the pensionary benefits already granted to chief secretaries.

The judgement explained that the Rules of Business do not empower the provincial government to issue such directions through a notification, particularly when there is no legal backing.

The FCC ruling came on an appeal filed by Balochistan’s chief secretary against the May 29, 2023, judgement of the Balochistan High Court (BHC), which had also struck down Notification No.13-25(5)/2019/SO-1(S&GAD) pertaining to the extension of lifetime facilities to retired chief secretaries of Balochistan and their widows.

The controversy arose from the notification, which was challenged before the BHC by Bayazid Khan Kharooti. The high court accepted the petition and observed that such benefits could not be granted without legal backing in the form of law, rules, or regulations. It further held that entitlement to perks for retired civil servants must be clearly outlined in legislation or policy and cannot be created through a mere executive notification.

While deciding the appeal, Justice Aamer Farooq observed that the reasoning of the high court did not suffer from any legal or jurisdictional defect warranting FCC interference; therefore, leave to appeal was refused.

“Any action, of whatever nature, must be firmly rooted in law and must be traceable to a legal source from which it derives its authority,” Justice Farooq observed, adding that this principle constitutes a fundamental affirmation of the constitutionality of the system of governance.

Justice Farooq further observed that a careful review of the Balochistan Rules of Business, 2012 does not support the extension of perks and privileges to the chief secretary. On the contrary, Rule 3(4) delineates the structure and composition of the government of Balochistan by distributing its business among various departments, as specified in Schedule-I (Section B).

The rule makes it clear that each department may exercise only those functions that are expressly assigned to it, the judgement said.

In this context, Schedule-I (Section B) specifically entrusts the Finance Department with the authority to frame civil service rules relating to pension, leave, pay revision, and their interpretation for all government servants.

This allocation indicates that matters concerning pensionary benefits, including those of the chief secretary, fall within the exclusive domain of the Finance Department, rather than the chief secretary or even the chief minister.

The court noted that the notification under challenge was issued by the Services and General Administration Department with the approval of the chief minister as the competent authority. However, such authority is neither contemplated nor supported by the Rules of Business; therefore, the action appears to have been taken without proper legal basis, the judgement observed.

Consequently, the notification, having been issued without the requisite competence, was rightly struck down by the high court, Justice Farooq held.

The judgement also referred to the Balochistan Civil Servants Act, 1974, which provides that “on retirement from service, a civil servant shall be entitled to receive such pension or gratuity as may be prescribed.”

This provision makes it clear that civil servants of the Balochistan government, including the chief secretary, are entitled only to such pension or gratuity as is prescribed by law.

The judgement emphasised that pension is structured within legal bounds and cannot exceed what is permitted under the law.

The prescribed pension is further governed by the Balochistan Civil Servants Pension Rules, 1989, which lay down the framework for pension-related matters. The perks and privileges granted to the chief secretary find no mention in these rules and, therefore, have no legal basis, the judgement emphasised.

TOKYO: Japan’s Naoya Inoue gave another boxing masterclass to beat countryman Junto Nakatani by unanimous decision and stay unbeaten in front of 55,000 fans at a sold-out Tokyo Dome on Saturday.

Inoue retained his undisputed super bantamweight titles and handed Nakatani the first loss of his career.

The bout had been billed as one of the biggest in Japanese boxing history, bringing together two unbeaten fighters with identical 32-0 records at the famous venue.

It did not disappoint, with Inoue seeing off a spirited challenge from rangy southpaw Nakatani to keep his crown as the undisputed king of Japanese boxing.

“I just wanted to show everyone that I could win this fight,” the 33-year-old Inoue said.

“Nakatani is a very strong-willed fighter, someone who’s always ranked among the world’s top pound-for-pound fighters, and that gives this win extra significance.”

Inoue took his record to 33-0, with 27 knockouts, after successfully defending his world titles for the seventh time.

He was meeting a dangerous opponent eight centimetres (three inches) taller and five years younger.

Nakatani used his longer reach to keep Inoue at bay in the early rounds, although the champion still managed to steal in and land some punches.

Inoue’s pinpoint accuracy and lightning reflexes saw him find the target more often, with Nakatani unable to respond in kind.

Nakatani began to find more success in the middle rounds but Inoue kept up his relentless attack and connected with a thundering straight shot in the seventh round.

Nakatani gained some momentum until an accidental headbutt left him needing attention for a cut above the eye.

Inoue rocked the challenger with an uppercut in the 11th round to close in on victory.

“I had four fights last year and then here at the Tokyo Dome tonight and that has taken its toll, so please let me rest for a while now,” Inoue said. “After that, I’ll come back and speak to my team and organise another fight that everyone can get excited about.”

Nicknamed “Big Bang”, Nakatani was fighting only his second bout at super bantamweight after making his debut in the division in late December.

He has held world titles in three different weight classes and was looking to catapult himself into boxing’s top echelons with a win over Inoue. His record dropped to 32-1, with 24 KOs.

Inoue was fighting at the Tokyo Dome for the second time, having beaten Mexico’s Luis Nery there in May 2024.

The area around the stadium was thronged with fans hours before doors opened.

The atmosphere reached fever pitch when Inoue and Nakatani made their entrances for a landmark bout in Japanese boxing.

“The view I had from the ring was one that only I could savour, but it was thanks to the 55,000 people in the stadium that I was able to see it,” Inoue said. “I will be back at the Tokyo Dome so please let me savour this view again.”

Inoue’s younger brother Takuma beat Kazuto Ioka by unanimous decision on the undercard to retain his WBC bantamweight world title.

The 37-year-old Ioka was attempting to win a world title in a fifth different weight class.

Villarreal secure CL spot, rotated Atletico triumph

BARCELONA: Villarreal guaranteed themselves a Champions League qualification spot with a 5-1 romp over Levante in La Liga on Saturday.

Later, Diego Simeone rotated his whole team with the Champions League in mind as Atletico Madrid defeated Valencia 2-0 at Mestalla.

Marcelino’s Villarreal, third, moved 18 points clear of fifth-place Real Betis, who have five games left to play.

Georges Mikautadze struck twice in the Yellow Submarine’s derby victory, with Alberto Moleiro, Tajon Buchanan and Nicolas Pepe also on target.

Carlos Espi netted for Levante, 19th, provisionally three points from safety and in severe danger of relegation, with Sevilla and Deportivo Alaves above them still to play this weekend.

“Congratulations to each and every one of the players. Let’s continue enjoying this moment,” said Marcelino, poised to leave Villarreal at the end of the season according to Spanish reports. “Let’s keep competing because we want to finish third.”

Villarreal are five points clear of fourth-place Atletico, who won at Valencia despite Simeone rotating all 11 players from the Champions League semi-final first leg 1-1 draw against Arsenal.

This was match number 1000 for Simeone in his coaching career, but he was thinking more about 1001, in London on Tuesday against Mikel Arteta’s Premier League leaders.

Youngsters Iker Luque and Miguel Cubo struck second half goals for Atletico, with defeated Valencia, 13th, only five points clear of the relegation zone.

Atletico took the lead after 74 minutes when Obed Vargas shuffled the ball out to Luque on the edge of the area and he produced a lethal low finish in at the near post.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 83rd minute when substitute Antoine Griezmann teed up Cubo to thump home.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside but a VAR review showed MLS-bound striker Griezmann had timed his run in behind to perfection.

PSG draw with Lorient with fringe team

PARIS: Paris St-Germain warmed up for the second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich by fielding a second-string line-up and throwing away the lead twice in a 2-2 draw with Lorient in Ligue 1 on Saturday.

Ibrahim Mbaye’s fortuitous early goal to put PSG in front at the Parc des Princes was soon cancelled out by Pablo Pagis for mid-table Lorient, but Warren Zaire-Emery gave the hosts the lead for the second time when he scored moments after coming on as a second-half substitute.

However, a mistake by teenage debutant Pierre Mounguengue allowed Aiyegun Tosin to run through and score a second equaliser for Lorient, and PSG could not find a winner — even being awarded a penalty in stoppage time for a non-existent handball which was eventually overturned after a VAR intervention.

The result means the outcome of the Ligue 1 title race remains a live issue, with PSG seven points clear of RC Lens who have four games remaining, including a trip to struggling Nice.

Lens also still have to play PSG at home on May 13, and Luis Enrique’s side are clearly focused principally on the defence of their European title as they head to Munich for Wednesday’s semi-final second leg with a 5-4 lead from the remarkable first meeting of the sides. The PSG coach made nine changes to his starting XI here, with Ecuador centre-back Willian Pacho and France forward Desire Doue the only players to retain their places from midweek.

Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who both scored twice against Bayern, were unused substitutes against Lorient while Vitinha was among the players not even in their matchday squad.

Earlier, Olympique de Marseille’s troubled season in the league continued with a comprehensive 3-0 defeat away to Nantes.

Shoaib reaches ITF final to end Pakistan’s long wait

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Mohammad Shoaib became the first Pakistan player in 20 years to reach an ITF men’s final after storming past China’s Fenming Meng 6-1, 6-1 in their last-four clash of the ITF Men’s Futures M-15 (Leg-1) here on Saturday.

Displaying exceptional skill and composure before a home crowd, Shoaib secured a dominant victory to set up a title clash against Russia’s Nikita Ianin, who beat Sweden’s Arvid Nordquist 6-4, 6-4 in the other semi-final.

In an all-Pakistani doubles final, the pair of Mohammad Abid and Muzammil Murtaza captured the title after nine years, defeating experienced duo of Aqeel Khan and Barkatullah 6-2, 2-6, 10-7.

PTF President Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi called Shoaib’s feat a historic moment for Pakistan tennis, noting that a home player reaching an ITF Futures final after three decades was “very special for the entire nation.”

He said hosting international tournaments aims to help Pakistani players earn ATP ranking points and transition into the professional circuit. “It is very satisfying to see that this vision is now becoming a reality,” he added.

Aisam also praised the doubles champions, calling their victory a reflection of dedication and teamwork. He reaffirmed the PTF’s commitment to organising more international events in Pakistan.

Second-string Bayern held by Heidenheim

BERLIN: A heavily-rotated Bayern Munich were held to a 3-3 draw at home by last-placed Heidenheim on Saturday, days out from their return Champions League semi-final against Paris St-Germain.

Bayern made seven changes to the side who lost 5-4 in a wild first leg in the French capital on Tuesday and were down 2-0 in the first half to goals from Budu Zivzivadze and Eren Dinkci.

Bayern roared back from a 3-0 deficit to win 4-3 last week at Mainz and this time around Leon Goretzka scored twice to level things up with half an hour remaining.

Zivzivadze scored again to put Heidenheim — who needed a win to have any chance of beating the drop — back in front but substitute Michael Olise scored in the 10th minute of stoppage time to snatch a point for the hosts.

Goalscorer Goretzka admitted Bayern’s thoughts were already on Wednesday’s clash with defending champions PSG, telling DAZN: “You can see how fired up everyone is. We’re looking forward to the game and we want to reach the final.”

Coach Vincent Kompany once again named a heavily changed line-up, leaving seven starters from Tuesday’s match including Harry Kane, Olise, Joshua Kimmich and Luis Diaz on the bench.

With Heidenheim needing a win to have any chance of beating the drop, the visitors started frantically, pinning Bayern back with a series of corners.Elsewhere, Tiago Tomas scored deep into stoppage time to snatch 10-man VfB Stuttgart a 3-3 draw at top-four rivals Hoffenheim.

Club record goalscorer Andrej Kramaric bagged a brace and the impressive Bazoumana Toure scored to have Hoffenheim leading 3-1.

Ermedin Demirovic joined Chris Fuehrich on the scoresheet to give Stuttgart hope before they lost captain Atakan Karazor to a red card for an ugly tackle on Fisnik Asllani.

Hoffenheim looked on track to win a crucial three points in the Champions League race but Tomas scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time to grab a share of the spoils.

Stuttgart and Hoffenheim are locked on 58 points, four behind RB Leipzig who can make sure of Champions League qualification with a win at Bayer Leverkusen.

Meanwhile, Union Berlin fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at home with Cologne and pick up coach Marie-Louise Eta’s first point in charge of the club.

One-time Union forward Marius Buelter and Germany winger Said El Mala scored for the visitors, but Tom Rothe cut the deficit before Livan Burcu’s 89th-minute goal levelled the scores.

Augsburg cruised to a 3-1 win at Werder Bremen, while Hamburg all but guaranteed top-division football next season with a 2-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt.

MADRID: Marta Kostyuk defeated Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 7-5 to win the Madrid Open for the first time on Saturday.

It was world number 23 Kostyuk’s first trophy at WTA 1000 level and her second title of the season.

She became only the second player outside of the top 20 to win the Madrid Open, in her third final of an impressive 2026 thus far.

Kostyuk won when she met Andreeva in Brisbane earlier this year in their only prior meeting.

The Ukrainian secured the first break to take a 4-2 lead in the opening set, with world number eight Andreeva struggling to handle her opponent’s superior power.

The 23-year-old Rouen Open winner spurned her first set point with a double fault but captured the second when Andreeva went long.

The Russian, who became favourite to win the tournament after Aryna Sabalenka was eliminated, made too many mistakes in the first set and Kostyuk was only too happy to take advantage of them.

Playing in her first WTA 1000 final, Kostyuk broke in the first game of the second set with Andreeva volleying into the net.

However, the 19-year-old broke back with a fizzing return down-the-line to tie at 1-1.

The players exchanged breaks again in the fourth and fifth games, before Kostyuk showed great resilience to save two set points and hold for 5-5.

Andreeva double faulted to give her opponent a 6-5 lead and the chance to serve for the title.

Kostyuk opened up three championship points and spurned the first two but triumphed when Andreeva sent a backhand long, collapsing to the floor in joy.

On Friday, Alexander Zverev booked the final meeting with World number one Jannik Sinner as the German second seed dispatched promising Belgian Alexander Blockx 6-2, 7-5.

World number three Zverev, in strong form, broke in the first and fifth games to surge into a 5-1 lead against his unseeded opponent. Zverev sealed the set with an ace.

Blockx survived two break points in the first game of the second set and another in the third as Zverev worked him hard. The Belgian put up a brave display as he saved two more break points in each of the seventh and ninth games.

Eventually Zverev took his eighth break point of the second set to nose 6-5 ahead, with a fortuitous net cord that broke Blockx’s resistance.

The German, who has suffered a string of semi-final defeats this season, made it to his first final with a powerful overhead winner.

GABORONE: Jamaica blazed into the record books at the World Athletics Relays on Saturday, becoming the first quartet to crack the 40-second barrier in the mixed 4x100 metres relay.

The team of Ackeem Blake, Tina Clayton, Kadrian Goldson and Tia Clayton scorched around the track in 39.99 seconds, breaking the world record in Gaborone, Botswana, the first time the event has been held in Africa.

Their lightning-fast run came just after Canada had set a new benchmark of 40.07 seconds in the first heat, only to see their record last mere minutes before Jamaica’s history-making run.

Using the event’s new man-woman-man-woman running order, Blake started for Jamaica before handing the baton to Tina Clayton.

Goldson took the third leg, setting up Tia Clayton for a blistering anchor run that carried the team under the 40-second mark.

Lecce win relegates Pisa and Verona from Serie A

MILAN: Lecce won 2-1 in Pisa on Friday to improve their chances of Serie A survival and condemn both their hosts and Hellas Verona to relegation.

The victory put Lecce, who occupy the last safe space in Serie A, four points clear of 18th-placed Cremonese, who host Lazio on Monday.

Earlier Venezia ensured they would be coming up from Serie B despite conceding a 90th-minute goal to draw at La Spezia.

Pisa stayed last in Serie A and fell 14 points behind Lecce with three matches to play. Verona, remain a place and a point better off, but with four games left cannot close the 13-point gap that separates them from Lecce and safety.

Lameck Banda fired Lecce after 52 minutes but the visitors only led for four minutes before Mehdi Leris, playing with his head bandaged, volleyed Pisa level.

Lecce regained the lead in the 65th minute with a goal that was the mirror-image of the first, as Walid Cheddira skimmed a shot inside the far post from the right side of the box.

Gabriele Piccinini, who had come on four minutes earlier, had a 76th minute chance to level but his header from two metres out was well saved by goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone.

On a difficult return to Serie A after a 34-year wait, Pisa have won only two games all season and have been in the relegation zone since the third round of matches.

Their season went awry even before it began with the surprise departure of Filippo Inzaghi, the manager who had secured their promotion.

His successor, another former Italian international, Alberto Gilardino, was sacked after their 23rd match.

Swede Oscar Hiljemark, who took over at just 33 years of age, has picked up only four points in 12 matches.

Pisa were relegated after just one season in Serie A for the fifth time. Only once have they survived a season in Serie A, in 1982-83 when they finished a point above the relegation places.

Verona go down after six seasons in Serie A.

In Serie B, Venezia who needed a win to ensure promotion, went two goals up against 10-man La Spezia before conceding twice in the last 17 minutes to draw 2-2.

Their disappointment was short-lived as third-place Monza conceded in the fifth minute of added time to lose 3-2 in Mantua.

That result also helped second-placed Frosinone, who won 1-0 at Juve Stabia and need one point from their last match, at home to Mantova, to be sure of promotion.

Venezia who return to Serie A after one season have been another yo-yo club — relegated immediately following their three previous promotions to the top flight.

LONDON: West Ham United’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford offered Tottenham Hotspur a lifeline in the battle for Premier League survival on Saturday.

Spurs remain in the relegation zone, two points from safety, but can move out of the bottom three with victory at Aston Villa on Sunday after the Hammers succumbed to just their third defeat in 11 league games.

Brentford boosted their chances of European qualification for the first time with a first win in eight matches.

Konstantinos Mavropanos was left to rue his luck in two key first-half incidents.

The Greek defender was unfortunate not to be awarded a free-kick as he turned the ball into his own net to open the scoring.

Mavropanos thought he had made amends moments later with a bullet header, but was ruled marginally offside by a VAR review.

Brentford had another call go in their favour early in the second half when Dango Ouattara won a penalty and Igor Thiago coolly converted his 22nd Premier League goal of the season.

Mikkel Damsgaard’s strike rounded off a damaging day for West Ham, who face title-chasing Arsenal next weekend.

Brentford move up to sixth, which could be enough to secure Champions League qualification.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United eased any lingering fears of being drawn into the relegation battle with a 3-1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion to end a five-game losing streak.

William Osula and Dan Burn scored in the opening 24 minutes as Newcastle edged up to 13th.

Jack Hinshelwood pulled a goal back, but defeat could prove costly to Brighton’s European ambitions as having started the weekend in sixth, they could end it outside the top half.

Harvey Barnes rounded off the scoring in stoppage time to bring some relief to the under-fire Eddie Howe.

Sunderland’s bid for Europe was also dented by a 1-1 draw at bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Nordi Mukiele put the Black Cats in front early on, but Sunderland played for over an hour a man down after a red card for Dan Ballard.

Ballard was sent off for pulling the hair of Tolu Arokodare. Ballard became the second player to penalised for the offence as Everton’s Michael Keane received a straight red for the same misdeed in January.

Santiago Bueno levelled but Wolves could not muster just a fourth league win of the season.

On Friday, Leeds United all but secured their place in the Premier League next season with a 3-1 win over already-relegated Burnley.

Goals from Anton Stach, Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin took Daniel Farke’s side nine points clear of the relegation zone with just four games remaining for those below them.

IPSWICH PROMOTED

Meanwhilel, Ipswich Town returned to the Premier League at the first time of asking as a 3-0 victory over visiting Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the regular Championship season on Saturday ensured they took the second automatic promotion slot.

Wrexham’s fairytale rise through the divisions was halted though as a 2-2 draw at home to Middlesbrough cost them a place in the promotion playoffs, which was taken by Hull City.

Ipswich needed a victory to make certain of finishing runners-up to Coventry City and early goals by George Hirst and Jaden Philogene settled any nerves at Portman Road.

The celebrations had already started by the time Kasey McAteer wrapped up the points late on.

Millwall and Middlesbrough also went into the final day with automatic promotion chances if Ipswich slipped up.

Millwall beat relegated Oxford United 2-0 to secure third place a point behind Ipswich, while Middlesbrough drew 2-2 at Wrexham — a result that meant the Welsh club’s hopes of a fourth straight promotion ended as they finished seventh.

A draw could have been enough for Wrexham but Hull’s 2-1 win against visitors Norwich City — their first win in seven league games — meant they finished two points above them in sixth.

Derby County had also been in with a chance of grabbing the final playoff place on a nerve-wracking finale to the season but lost 2-1 at home to Sheffield United having been in front.

Hull will face Millwall in the two-legged playoff semi-finals starting on May 8, with Middlesbrough up against in-form Southampton who finished fourth, level on 80 points with Boro.

NZ win rain-hit T20 to square series against Bangladesh

DHAKA: Bevon Jacobs struck an unbeaten 62 to guide New Zealand to a six-wicket win over Bangladesh in a rain-hit third T20 International on Saturday, with the series ending 1-1.

Chasing 103 in a revised 15-over contest, New Zealand slipped to 33-4 before Jacobs and Dean Foxcroft put on an unbeaten stand of 71 to reach the target in 11.4 overs in Dhaka.

Bangladesh won the opener before the second match was rained off.

Shoriful Islam produced a fiery opening spell and struck twice in his first over to remove opener Katene Clarke and number three Dane Cleaver, both out for one.

He returned in his second over to bowl Tim Robinson, who made 23 off 14 balls, and New Zealand slumped further when off-spinner Mahedi Hasan dismissed stand-in captain Nick Kelly for one.

Jacobs hit five fours and three sixes in his 31-ball knock and got the chase back on track in a well-crafted partnership with Foxcroft, who made 15.

He took on Shoriful in his final overs to wrest back the momentum while Foxcroft played the anchor role.

Shoriful was Bangladesh’s standout bowler with 3-19.

New Zealand’s bowlers earlier bundled Bangladesh out for 102 in 14.2 overs.

Bangladesh never recovered from a disastrous powerplay that saw them lose three wickets in quick succession.

Opener Saif Hassan started strongly with two boundaries before falling for 16 on the first ball of debutant left-arm spinner Jayden Lennox’s international career.

Nathan Smith bowled Tanzid Hasan Tamim for six and then sent Parvez Hossain Emon back for a first-ball duck, leaving Towhid Hridoy to survive the hat-trick ball.

Captain Litton Das injected some urgency, scoring a brisk 26 off 17, but his dismissal after a long rain break left the hosts in trouble.

Hridoy anchored the middle overs before falling to a Josh Clarkson yorker, and Ben Sears wrapped up the tail with two quick wickets.

Clarkson led the bowling with 3-9, while Smith and Lennox took two wickets each.

Leg-spinner Ish Sodhi became New Zealand’s all-time leading wicket-taker in T20 internationals, surpassing pace bowler Tim Southee’s record to reach 165 wickets.

Litton broke the Bangladesh wicketkeeping record for most dismissals, going past Mushfiqur Rahim’s tally of 62 to set a new mark of 64.

LAHORE: Fast bowler Hunain Shah, the hero of Hyderabad Kingsmen’s thrilling victory over Islamabad United in Eliminator-2 of the HBL Pakistan Super League, says that there was no specific talk with captain Marnus Labuschagne before the speedster delivered the very last over to give his team a jaw-dropping two-run win here at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Right-armer Hunain in a near-miracle — as United required six off the final six balls to overhaul 186-5 — bowled one of the best overs of his life, conceding only three runs besides claiming a wicket to steer PSL debutants Kingsmen to the all-important final.

“The only plan was to bowl all yorkers in that over but with a correct line. Thank God I was able to play my role in my team’s victory at that vital moment in this crucial match,” Hunain said in his post-match media conference on Friday night.

“While my yorkers proved effective, our fielders also did a fine job during the match,” he added.

“I thank the fans also who always boost our morale in these thrilling matches,” the 22-year-old said adding

He continued, “As I am playing this PSL after a rehab due to injury, I had to work extremely hard to be able to compete.

“[My brother] Naseem Shah guided me on how to come out from the pressure of bad performances.”

Meanwhile, United skipper Shadab Khan said no special message was conveyed to all-rounder Faheem Ashraf from the team management before Hunain bowled the final over of the match.

Faheem and Chris Green were at the crease when Hunain bowled the last over.

“I have no words to sum up my emotions about the defeat, no one can explain it,” Shadab said. “Yes, good luck to Hunain who has struggled for quite a while due to his fitness issues. He came back strongly to produce a match-winning performance.”

Commenting on United’s show in PSL-11, Shadab said that they needed to improve bowling, particularly in death overs.

According to Shadab, his spinners remained very much economical in Eliminator-2 but did not complete their quota of overs because he reckoned Kingsmen’s batter Usman Khan would handle spinners well.

Defending his decision to bowl first in Eliminator-2, Shadab said that the ball was gripping in the beginning that caused problems for batters.

LAHORE: Finally, the big day has come as Babar Azam’s Peshawar Zalmi lock horns with an inspiring Hyderabad Kingsmen side led by Marnus Labuschagne in the summit clash of the HBL Pakistan Super League here at the Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday.

Luckily, enthusiastic fans who were allowed entry at the stadiums in this PSL edition only at the eleventh hour before the playoffs, will keep the atmosphere energised when the rival captains come out for the toss.

Interestingly, both the finalists have come to the big stage through contrasting routes. While Zalmi, who have won one PSL title back in 2017, remained significantly consistent in this season by winning eight of their 10 initial-stage matches and the qualifier, debutants Kingsmen had a nightmarish start to the campaign losing five games on the trot before getting back on track to win the next five fixtures and qualify for the playoffs. The rejuvenated Kingsmen side then brushed aside Multan Sultans in Eliminator-1 before edging Islamabad United in Eliminator-2 to reach the decider.

Babar in his pre-match media conference on Saturday indicated that his side would try to keep the winning formula intact.

“So far our journey in this edition has been quite nice. Our strategy is paying off so we will try to apply it in the final too,” Babar said during the media conference on Saturday after unveiling the PSL trophy alongside Labuschagne at the Gaddafi Stadium.

“Like every other match, the final is also a game of pressure. Tomorrow’s game has its own pressure. As captain everyone dreams of his team lifting the trophy so I am quite excited.

“Momentum is always important for a team to win and it is good that our momentum has been there from the very beginning,” Babar, the leading scorer of this year’s PSL with 588 runs, added.

“Every team makes and execute plans accordingly. [However], sometimes things suddenly change but my team is experienced, one having the ability to control such situations.”

Zalmi had two in-form bowlers from Bangladesh — Nahid Rana and Shoriful Islam — but when they left for national duty, the team management arranged the alternate combination and that also clicked, Babar underlined.

According to Babar, there was no room for his team to show complacency against Kingsmen.

Commenting on his own batting show in this PSL season, the right-handed batter with two centuries under his belt in this edition said that he had tried some old techniques which came off.

        sandbox="allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms">

When asked if batting as opener proved crucial in bringing his form back, the 31-year-old said that almost all his impressive performances came when he opened.

“It is a different scenario question [on which] I will talk about later,” Babar said but went on to add that sometimes a player as per the team’s requirement had to bat at different positions.

“The coach or [the] team management have to plan where a player can be more suitable.

“[Studying] in which country we are going to play and what their playing conditions are is their job and it is better if you put forward this question to them; they will give a better reply,” Babar said.

Speaking at his presser, Labuschagne said that remaining firm with the procedure will be important for Kingsmen in the high-pressure decider.

“For us it is important to control the situation and make sure we stick to our process of plans and rest will take care of itself. It is going to be a great occasion, a great moment,” the skipper told reporters.

Labuschange acknowledged that Zalmi proved themselves tough opponents.

“We obviously know they have been an in-form side for the whole tournament. We have played one game against them and it was really a tight game,” he said.

“You know some upsets have certainly lit up this tournament and it has certainly been exciting [both] as a player and as a viewer. And tomorrow is just another game and we have just got to make sure that we stick to the process,” he reiterated.

Asked what was the secret behind their turnaround, Labuschagne termed self-belief and confidence were the crucial factors.

“I think [self] belief and confidence are two really big factors in any team. And when you create that in a team you can earn achievements. I think that’s what really instills in the team. And I think that’s what’s really important.”

About the achievement in the first ever appearance in the PSL, he said: “Yes, it [reaching the final] is certainly an amazing opportunity. You know my first experience of PSL and you know leading Hyderabad Kingsman has been really exciting.

“I have enjoyed every moment. There have certainly been ups and downs, but I think that is what makes it so exciting.”

INTERVIEW: Qualifying for LA2028 Olympics Pakistan’s main focus, says Manzoor Sr

KARACHI: The year 2026 is crucial for Pakistan hockey that has endured many crises on and off the field for ages.

After a gap of eight years, the national team finally made it to this year’s World Cup, by reaching the final of a qualifying event in Ismailia, Egypt during March. Following the World Cup, Pakistan are set to lock horns with their continental rivals in the Asian Games scheduled to be staged in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan during September-October.

Pakistan, the former four-time World Cup winners, lost the decider in Ismailia 4-1 to England, the same team whom the Green-shirts will be facing in the pool stage of the World Cup being co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands from Aug 15 to 30.

So, the challenge for Pakistan looks massive particularly when one glances at the prevailing state of affairs in the national game.

Head coach stays upbeat ahead of this year’s World Cup

However, Manzoor-ul-Hassan Senior, the recently-appointed head coach of the national senior team, remains optimistic about Pakistan’s show in the forthcoming World Cup.

“In my opinion, the current Pakistan team contains six, seven players who can be ranked among the world’s top players. They have the capability to perform [well] in any [top-level] international event,” Manzoor, who replaced Khawaja Junaid after the Ismailia event, said in an exclusive interview with Dawn.

“Nothing is impossible in sports, as it depends on how a team performs on a given day,” the member of Pakistan’s bronze-medal winning squad at the 1976 Olympics added.

“As regards the World Cup, the players’ hard work will be crucial. I, as the head coach, will try my best to facilitate them in every way so that they can focus fully on the game and perform to the best of their abilities.”

Interestingly, the head coach responding to a query asserted that Pakistan’s main focus, above everything, was on qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“Definitely my and the team’s aim is to give our best in the World Cup. However, our main target is to play the [2026] Asian Games final in order to qualify for the Olympic Games,” he said.

“Time has come for Pakistan to start producing legendary Olympians again; in this regard we have an extremely rich legacy which should be revived.”

On what steps the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) was planning to take for building mental strength of the players, Manzoor said that it depended on a player’s calibre.

“If a player is talented, and succeeds in keeping his performance above average for the first couple of years in any global-level contest, he sooner or later embarks on a journey in international competition,” the coach stated.

“We, on our part, will try to engage and groom players of national senior and junior teams, or other players who have been part of national training camps during the past five years or so in order to develop a solid pool of campaigners to secure the future of Pakistan hockey.”

Answering a question on Pakistan’s strategy for the World Cup, the 74-year-old coach elaborated a plan.

“We held trials in Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar [for national senior and junior teams] last month, in which some 200 players appeared. On the basis of these trials, we will now select a certain number of players who will participate in a national camp during the first week of May,” the head coach added.

“In this camp, we will be concentrating on polishing the best available talent in Pakistan to prepare them for the World Cup.”

PRO LEAGUE BENEFICIAL

Manzoor insisted that Pakistan’s participation in the FIH Pro League during the month of June would benefit them ahead of the 16-team global event.

“Unfortunately, Pakistan have not won a major international title since clinching the World Cup way back in 1994. Moreover, we did not play [enough] international games abroad after that, and kept on competing mostly in second-tier events,” he said.

“We did not participate in the Pro League [that started in 2019] either. Now we are going to compete in the final leg of this year’s Pro League [before the World Cup] in Belgium and England where our team will play eight matches, two each against Spain, Belgium, England and India.

“Whereas other top-level teams have played 70 odd matches which gives them much more exposure to world-class competition.

“Still these eight [Pro League] outings will benefit us in our preparations for the World Cup.

“No doubt, the World Cup is very tough but there is no need to be disappointed. Playing in the Pro League before the World Cup will be a golden opportunity for us,” he maintained.

Here it is pertinent to mention that Pakistan lost all their matches of the first two legs — held in Argentina and Australia — of the ongoing Pro League season.

DEEP DEFENCE A CONCERN

Giving his view on Pakistan’s weak area, the head coach pointed out that the team’s defence needed improvement.

“Looking at Pakistan’s previous matches of the 2025-26 Pro League, I reckon deep defence is our team’s weak area. If we scored [even] three goals in a match, we conceded four,” Manzoor underlined.

“This will be addressed by the coaches in the training camp being held [in Lahore] for the World Cup.”

When highlighted that Pakistan qualified for the World Cup by beating relatively easier opponents, like China, Japan, Malaysia and Austria in Ismailia, but suffered a big loss at the hands of England in the final, the head coach sounded technical.

“Undoubtedly, the 4-1 loss was a bad result but of those four goals, two were made due to [inadvertent] deflections of our players. [Still] mistakes like these in a high-profile game prove costly, as happened in the Ismailia [final],” said Manzoor while disagreeing that China, Japan and Malaysia were weaker opponents.

“Our players have the potential [to compete]. However, utilising that potential at the right time is the key.”

Pakistan, the head coach emphasised, were competing against world’s prominent teams like Australia, Germany, Belgium, Spain, England and India in the 2025-26 Pro League, which he termed “a very good step” by the PHF for the better future of the country.
