Success of new review system thrills ICC
The DRS was called upon twice on Tuesday and produced outcomes hard to argue with on the opening day of first Test here.
When Ross Taylor was on 54 pace bowler Mohammad Asif had a leg before shout declined but his captain, Mohammad Yousuf, asked for DRS which showed on-field umpire Billy Doctrove was right to say not out.
Then on penultimate ball of the day, Asif had a shout against Brendon McCullum upheld by Simon Taufel but Black Caps captain Daniel Vettori asked for DRS and TV umpire Rudi Koertzen ruled impact had been outside the line and Taufel had to change his decision to not out.
ICC umpires manager Doug Cowie, a former Test umpire from New Zealand, believes they have hit jackpot with DRS which uses three colours — orange, red and green — to determine the outcome.
“We have a process in place now that gives clear indications to third umpire on whether he should change a decision that is made on the field or not,” Cowie said.
“It was good to see two chances to see it at work, and it was interpreted exactly the way it was supposed to be,” Cowie said.—Agencies
