ATHENS, March 7: Police have arrested two young Greeks suspected of a series of migrant muggings, the police said on Saturday.

The two men, aged 22 and 21, are linked to several muggings this past week in which migrants were robbed of their money and mobile phones, the police said.

Police suspect they were part of a 12-member gang targeting foreigners in the working class district of Egaleo which has a high immigrant population.

Most of the victims were Pakistani migrants.

Migrant beatings have lately multiplied in Athens’ poorer districts where migrants are blamed for an increase in petty crime, though statistics show that most crimes in the country are committed by Greeks.

Greece has been struggling to cope with an immigration influx from Asia and Africa that has rapidly grown in recent years. —AFP
