WANA, March 25: Seven Arabs were killed in a suspected US drone attack on two vehicles in the Makeen area of South Waziristan on Wednesday.

An official said that the drone fired missiles on a car and a pickup truck going from Makeen to Ladha at about 5pm. The area is inhabited mostly by Mehsud tribesmen.

Local people said that the bodies of the people killed in the attack had been charred beyond recognition. “Militants rushed to the site and carried away the charred bodies in sacks,” said a local tribesman who did not want to be identified.

Administration officials said that a team had been sent to the area for information.

The US Central Intelligence Agency has been carrying out drone attacks in the tribal region adjacent to Afghanistan since Aug 31 last year. At least 38 such strikes have been reported from Fata and settled areas and some top ‘commanders’ of Al Qaeda and Taliban have been killed.

Tribal elder Malik Saeed Anwar Mehsud condemned the Makeen attack and said that such actions would intensify hatred against Americans and Europeans.

AFP quoted a tribal security official as saying that some Uzbeks had also been killed in the attack.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Politicians not saying much
The government’s lavish spending does not alarm the opposition politicians for they, too, are its beneficiaries.
  • The tide has turned
The politicians may allege conspiracies by outsiders but have only their own shenanigans to blame.
