ISLAMABAD, March 19: An investigation report on the terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team has blamed security lapse for the strike. It also said that some foreign countries were involved, sources told Dawn on Thursday.

Adviser on Interior Rehman Malik presented the 40-point report to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani at a meeting at the Prime Minister’s House, but it was not made public officially.

The report said a “complete security lapse” gave the 12 terrorists a free hand to carry out their mission as police did not reach the scene for at least half an hour.

It said the attack had been planned and financed by some foreign countries and militants fighting in South Waziristan might have been used by the perpetrators.

The sources said the report would be reviewed by all intelligence and security agencies before sharing it with the Sri Lankan government.

According to the report, police have so far failed to arrest any of the attackers. Only five people who had allegedly helped the terrorists were detained.

A white car believed to have been used in the attack and impounded by police was sold in Sialkot and brought to Lahore for the crime, it added.
