TEHRAN, March 9: Iranian rebels killed one man and kidnapped another in an attack on Monday on a workshop in the town of Iranshahr in south-eastern Iran, the official IRNA news agency reported.

“Several armed men broke into a gas supply workshop in Iranshahr and shot dead one employee.

They also took another worker hostage,” the agency said, quoting an unnamed source.

IRNA called the attack a “terrorist incident,” without elaborating.

“The attackers have been identified and efforts are under way to arrest them and release the abducted person,” the agency quoted the source as saying.

Iranshahr is near the frontier with Pakistan in Iran’s Sistan-Baluchestan province, home to the large ethnic Baloch minority.

Police have clashed repeatedly with rebels of the Sunni Muslim Jundullah (Soldiers of God) group in the south-eastern province.

Jundullah, blamed for a string of attacks and kidnappings in the province, said in December it had killed 16 Iranian policemen it seized in June last year.—AFP
