SRINAGAR, March 7: Indian forces fired teargas canisters and used bamboo batons on Saturday to disperse hundreds of Muslims protesting the killing of a teenager a day earlier in occupied Kashmir.

Clashes erupted as people marched to a memorial gathering for 17-year-old Shahid Ahmed Ahangar, who was shot dead by Indian troops on Friday in Srinagar.

At least 23 others, including six soldiers, were injured in Friday’s clashes, according to police.

Chanting “We want freedom” and other slogans, the protesters were stopped by troops on Saturday who tried to prevent them from marching to Rainawari district in Srinagar.

No injuries were immediately reported from clashes between protesters and troops, said a police officer.—Agencies
