PM says he will advise Zardari to end Punjab standoff

ISLAMABAD, March 11: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Gilani announced on Wednesday that he would advise President Asif Ali Zardari to end governor’s rule in Punjab and allow the majority party in the assembly to elect a new leader of the house.

Speaking at a dinner he hosted at the Prime Minister’s house for newly elected and retiring senators, Mr Gilani said: “We will resolve our issues.”

He said the government wanted to resolve all issues in accordance with the charter of democracy signed by the late Benazir Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Sharif.

He said all issues could be resolved by implementing the charter and the government would implement it in letter and spirit. He made the remarks after a meeting with Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani some time before the dinner.

Referring to the judiciary issue, the prime minister said: “For every wrong there is a remedy and every one should join hands to resolve issues.”

Mr Gilani said: “We have no right to be in power if we cannot deliver.” He said he wanted strengthening of institutions for the next generation.

The prime minister was optimistic about national economy which he said was growing although European countries and other states being in recession.

Late in the night Mr Gilani and Governor Taseer called on President Zardari soon after the later returned from Iran. They apprised him of the situation in the wake of a crackdown launched by the government to foil the lawyers’ long march
