NEW DELHI, Feb 28: India has handed over to its navy the responsibility for security in its territorial waters.

Under the move, naval commanders have been designated as “coastal defence commanders”. The number of ships and aircraft in the navy will be enhanced and the number of bases under its control will be increased.

Announcing the decisions in Kochi on Saturday, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said the Mumbai attacks had shaken up the country, hence the changes in the maritime security policy.—APP
