COLOMBO: The Pakistani driver who drove the Sri Lankan team to safety has been invited for a week-long holiday in the island by the biggest newspaper publishing company here.

Lake House, publishers of Daily News and the Observer, said they invited driver Meher Mohammed Khalil and his wife, an official said.

The Sri Lankan team had described Mr Khalil, 42, as a hero. “We owe the team bus driver our lives,” skipper Mahela Jayawardene said before leaving Pakistan on Wednesday. Spin wizard Muttaih Muralitharan had given his shirt and cap to Mr Khalil.—AFP
