ISLAMABAD, March 14: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman called on Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and tendered her resignation, sources in the Prime Minister’s House said on Saturday.

The prime minister was reluctant to accept the resignation, but accepted it on Ms Rehman’s insistence.
Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas Qamar Zaman Kaira has been given additional charge of the information ministry.

Ms Rehman reportedly decided to resign after she opposed the government’s decision to remove transmission of some TV channels from the cable operators’ network.

Code of conduct: Talking to journalists outside the Parliament House on Saturday, Mr Kaira urged the media to draw a code of conduct for itself, adds PPI.

He said that a certain section of the media was becoming partisan in favour of one party and broadcasting humiliating programmes against the PPP co-chairman and the president of Pakistan.

Mr Kaira, who was given additional charge of the ministry of information, urged the media houses to prepare a code of ethics for themselves, saying if the government made such a code then it would be blamed for crushing freedom of speech.

He said that PPP had never shut the doors of reconciliation and dialogue with the PML-N, adding the government was ready to talk to the PML-N in accordance with the Charter of Democracy.
