ISLAMABAD, March 3: JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman met Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani at the PM’s House on Tuesday and discussed with him proposals to defuse tensions between the PPP-led government and the Pakistan Muslim League-N.

The prime minister said he would continue his efforts to achieve consensus on all issues of national importance.

Mr Gilani expressed the hope that things would settle down by corrective measures being taken by the government.

Appreciating the Maulana’s reconciliation efforts, the prime minister said the political leadership should rise to the occasion to steer the country out of the crisis.Maulana Fazl commended Mr Gilani’s desire and endeavours to defuse the situation.

Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani also called on the prime minister on Tuesday.

An official handout says: “The army chief apprised the prime minister of his meetings with the US secretary of state and senior defence officials of the US administration during his week-long visit to the United States.”

Gen Kayani informed Mr Gilani that in the meetings he highlighted Pakistan’s position on various national and regional issues.

The prime minister congratulated the army chief on his successful visit to the US and hoped that it would strengthen defence ties between the two countries.
