Pakistan seniors slip after two defeats in World Bridge

KARACHI: Pakistan Seniors slipped to seventh spot in the Seniors Bowl in the World Bridge Championship in Sao Paulo after suffering two massive defeats against Japan and USA, according to information made available here on Tuesday.

Pakistan started the seventh round in style by handing out 24-6 drubbing to Egypt.

However, they were thrashed by Japan 9-21 and USA 8-22 thus slipping to seventh from the fifth.

Bridge Federation of Asia and Middle East (BFAME) Champions Tariq Rasheed Khan’s Pakistan Senior team have won six of their nine league matches in 22 team contest so far.

England are maintaining their lead in Seniors category having accumulated 182 Victory Points (VPs) followed by Egypt 182, Belgium 157, USA-II 154, Poland 152, USA-I 152, Pakistan 151, Indonesia 148, Sweden 145 and Canada 135 VPs.

Pakistan’s Open team continued their dismal show by sliding to 19th after suffering 12-18 loss to USA-2 and they faced clean-sweep from Norway 25-0.

Pakistan Open won their second match, beating Morocco in the 7th round match after beating Mexico.

Reigning Bermuda Bowl Champion Norway are leading having accumulated 180 VPs in nine rounds. They closely followed by Bulgaria 176. Italy 175, Netherlands 167, Argentina and China Long Zhu 166 each, USA-2 165, Russia 161, Germany 139, Chinese Taipei and Egypt 129 VPs.

China are leading in the ladies Venice Cup with 178 VPs followed by USA-I 167.5, Italy 165, USA-II 159, Egypt 158, France 156, Denmark 153, India 141, Spain 139 and Morocco 137 VPs.

Pakistan’s women’s team is placed at 15th spot at this stage. In their last three matches, they defeated Argentina 17-13 and lost next two matches to Morocco 14-16 and Barbados 10-20. —APP
