KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Fisheries Zahid Ali Bhurgri has directed relevant officials to make efforts to boost fish production, besides conserving mangroves forests and pala fish.

In a meeting with his department officials on Friday, the minister informed that a research institute will be established soon and modern fish markets will be constructed in Hyderabad and Sukkur. ‘Efforts are also afoot to bring Karachi Fish Harbor on modern lines,’ said Bhurgri.

He criticised officials for forming mere committees and limiting schemes and proposals to books. ‘It is time to take concrete measures to expand the fishing industry in a manner that will benefit every man belonging to this sector. No negligence in this regard will be tolerated,’ he said.

‘We have arranged for a piece of land to establish a fish research institute. We will also seek help from the federal government in this regard. After receiving training from this institute thousands of unemployed people will be able to get jobs. The fisheries department would also benefit from it.’

‘We have imported modern technology for fishing and are installing this technology in sea and fresh waters,’ he said, hoping that the new technology would help boost fish production and the country’s economy. –PPI
