HYDERABAD: Two men and a woman were killed and an unspecified number of trees and electricity poles were uprooted when intermittent rain with strong winds across the province late on Thursday night and continued to drizzle in some parts on Friday.
In Hyderabad, the second spell of monsoon rains began on Thursday night and continued intermittently till Friday.
Parts of the city plunged into darkness with the onset of the rains but by and large main roads in the city, Latifabad and Qasimabad talukas did not get flooded.
Youths and families thronged picnic spots like Al-Manzar, Kalri Lake, new Hyderabad city to enjoy the rains.
The meteorological department’s forecast does not rule out widespread monsoon rains in Sindh including Karachi and Hyderabad during next 36 hours.
In Sanghar, farmers were happy at the recent rains because they believed it would benefit cotton, sugarcane, rice and other crops except for freshly-sown onion nurseries, which were slightly damaged.
At some places, strong winds coupled with rains, caused damage to cotton and sugarcane and brought cotton-picking to a halt. The wind uprooted many trees electricity poles, disrupting power supply to many areas.
Tail-end growers were happy because the rain would herald an end to shortage of water.
A man was killed in Plulel village near Sanghar when roof of a mosque collapsed on him during the rain.
It rained in Nawabshah and adjoining towns preceded by a thunderstorm late on Thursday night and turned the weather pleasant.
The rainwater accumulated on the roads, causing difficulty to people in moving about the town, more so because of suspension of power supply.
Strong winds and rain caused several motorcycles to slip and uprooted trees and poles in different parts of the district.
In Badin and its adjoining areas, it started drizzling late on Thursday night and continued till Friday, leading to breakdown of power and sewerage system.
Growers claimed the rain had harmed chilly, cotton, tomatoes and paddy seedlings in large areas in Golarchi and Tando Bago, Badin taluka.
It rained intermittently in Thatta and coastal towns Jati, Sujawal, Shah Bundar and Ghorabari on Friday.
A man and was electrocuted and another suffered injuries when lightning struck them in Umerkot and its adjoining areas as monsoon rains continued to lash the area on the second consecutive day on Friday.
Rain coupled with wind storm which started in the evening on Thursday and continued well into the next day uprooted poles, signboards, trees and brought vehicular traffic to a halt. Wind blew away many make-shift and straw-made huts.
Chandio Kolhi was electrocuted to death in Bajir Mohalla near Samaro and Ghansham Bajir suffered burns when lighting struck him.
Ms Alma, 29, died when lightning struck her in Dharendro village of Chhachhro taluka.
Intermittent rains lashed Mirpurkhas and its adjoining towns and villages, paralyzing daily life and flooding low-lying areas under knee deep water.
It started raining late on Thursday night and continued intermittently throughout the night.
Rainwater entered many houses in Lalchandabad, Khad plot, Mir Jo Plot, Pak colony, Rajar Colony, Nawab Colony, Hameedpura Colony, Khaar Para and many slum areas.
Power supply was suspended with the first drop of rain and restored on Friday morning. Some mud-thatched houses were damaged in the slum areas.
It continued to rain intermittently in different towns of the district including Kot Ghulam Mohammad, Mirwah Gorchani, Digri, Tando Jan Mohammad, Jhuddo, Naukot, Nabisar, Jhillori, Khaan, Patoyoon, Jhurbi, Phuladiyoon and Sindhri.
In Mithi, it rained heavily on Thursday night and moderately in Islamkot, Chhachhro, Diplo and Nagarparkar.
The rain started at 6.15pm and continued till the filing of this report at 8pm.
The rains have refilled underground water aquifers and turned Thar Desert into a green grassy area.
