LANDI KOTAL: Two women and three children were wounded when militants targeted government installations and residential compounds with rockets and mortar shells here on Saturday, officials said.
At least five projectiles fired from different directions landed near grid station, railway station, agency headquarters and veterinary hospitals and some houses.
Officials said that two women and three children were injured when house of an Afghan national was hit by a mortar shell near the grid station.
The injured were taken to hospital where condition of one child was stated to be serious. Two of the injured children were identified as Ayaz and Azeema.
An official of Khyber Rifles Lt-Col Atif told Dawn that security forces retaliated with heavy gunfire after the militants attack.
The official dispelled the impression among the residents that local population and private residences had been targeted by the security forces.
He said that the security forces had been taking extreme care to avoid any damage to civilians and their properties.
Meanwhile, Agency Headquarters Hospital Landi Kotal remained closed for second day on Saturday as local doctors and paramedics had gone on an indefinite protest strike against the kidnapping of one of their colleagues.
A spokesman of the protesting doctors Dr Aashiq said that they would stage a protest demonstration at the governor house in Peshawar if Dr Feroz Shah, kidnapped on last Wednesday, was not recovered in next 48 hours.
Emergency ward of the hospital, however, remained open to treat serious patients.
