ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is callously delaying the rebuilding of the safety fence of Korang bridge, exposing pedestrians to the threat of falling down as they move closer to the edge while avoiding oncoming heavy traffic on the Islamabad Highway.

The fence partially collapsed when a truck skidded off the road and fell into the natural stream below.

'The bridge was damaged a month ago when a truck carrying vegetables fell from it, however no one was killed or injured,' said an official of the Islamabad Traffic Police helpline (1915).

The safety railing of the bridge was damaged and we have conveyed our concerns to the relevant department (CDA), the official said.

'We have affixed warning signs next to the damaged safety railing and this is all what we (ITP) can do,' he added.

The ITP official told this reporter that: 'A narrow and damaged bridge on the main Islamabad Highway has now turned into a death trap for the motorists as many fatal accidents have taken place on it during the past few months.'

The government has allocated a sum of Rs200 million for the reconstruction of the highway from Airport Chowk to Rawat, however, the CDA bosses have yet to initiate the project due to prevailing financial crunch in the authority.

Victims of the accidents have demanded early repair of the Korang Bridge.

An official of the Engineering and Traffic Wing of the civic agency, when approached, said 'the bridge was safe,' assuring the safety railings would be rebuilt in the shortest possible time.

'Our engineers are already present at the under-construction Kak bridge and they will start the repair work shortly,' the CDA official said.
