QUETTA: Supreme Court Bar Association president Ali Ahmed Kurd has praised the government’s decision to reinstate Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and other deposed judges.

A large number of lawyers and political activists celebrated the prime minister’s announcement on Monday.

Talking to newsmen, Mr Kurd said that although the decision was taken too late it was encouraging that the government had at last agreed to accept the people’s demand. He said that the entire nation supported the lawyers’ struggle over the past two years.

He said the lawyers’ movement was for the rule of law, independence of judiciary and supremacy of the parliament. It was against the unlawful acts of Gen Pervez Musharraf who on Nov 3, 2007 deposed judges of the Supreme Court and high courts, he added.

Mr Kurd lauded the role of political workers and members of the civil society in the struggle.

Mr Kurd and some other bar leaders, including Shakeel Ahmed Hadi and Baz Mohammad Kakar, flew to Islamabad to congratulate Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and fellow lawyers.
