ISLAMABAD: President and co-chairperson of the Pakistan People’s Party, Asif Ali Zardari, and chief of the Pakistan Muslim League-N Nawaz Sharif have called separate meetings of their parties in Islamabad on Monday to discuss the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).

Mr Zardari has also invited heads of coalition parties at the Presidency on Monday night. Mr Sharif will meet his party men at the Punjab House.

‘We have sent invitations to heads of coalition parties for the meeting,’ a PPP leader said.

Fauzia Wahab, PPP’s information secretary, did not give details of the agenda of the meeting to be held at the Presidency and why it has been called.

‘It is a routine meeting. There is a possibility that the issue of NRO will be discussed there,’ she told a private TV channel.

President Zardari and Mr Sharif met last Monday to ‘extend political reconciliation’ and during that meeting, the PML-N did not bring up the NRO.

According to sources, Mr Sharif focussed on passing the 18th Amendment that would repeal the 17th Amendment. The undisclosed ‘understanding’ between the two leaders was reflected by PML-N leaders attending the NRO committee session. They just boycotted it when the ordinance was passed by the committee.

According to analysts, the PML-N would act in a similar way when NRO would be tabled in the lower house and there is a strong possibility that it would be passed by the National Assembly.

The PPP may face some difficulty in getting it passed by the Senate as Pakistan Muslim League-Q enjoys a majority there. Hence the PPP requires the support of other parties.

Sources also hinted that the PPP might have reached some ‘understanding’ with the Q-League as hedge against a possibility of PML-N not supporting it in parliament.
