LAHORE: More than 1,000 police will perform security and other related duties during the Lahore visit of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday (today).

According to the security plan, 1,000 cops, including plainclothesmen, will take positions on different routes at 120 points between the Allama Iqbal International Airport and the Government College University.

Twenty plainclothesmen will be deployed outside the GCU and the Governor’s House in addition to the local police. The places the US delegation members are scheduled to visit will be checked with the help of sniffers half an hour before their arrival.

The officials escorting the VVIP cavalcade will be equipped with bullet-proof jackets and weapons.

The official schedule of the visit include the GCU, the Governor’s House and 90-Shahra-e-Qaid-i-Azam. There will also be deployment en route to Jati Umra, Raiwind and Badashahi Mosque if the places are included in the visit schedule.

No less than 70 security points have been finalised on the route to Jati Umra.

According to the traffic diversion plan, The Mall, Jail Road and Lower Mall will be closed for ordinary traffic and motorists will be diverted to alternative routes.

A full-dress rehearsal was held on Wednesday on the final route of the cavalcade under the supervision of SSP (operations) Chaudhry Shafiq Ahmed.

An important meeting was also held at the Qilla Gujjar Singh Police Lines, attended by the CCPO, additional IGs of CID and special branch and the SSP (operations) which reviewed the final security plan.

An official told Dawn the police had arrangements for both road and air movement of Mrs Clinton.

He said the security plan did not include air surveillance, however, policemen equipped with binoculars will be deployed on rooftops on the delegation’s route.

The SSP and three divisional SPs will inspect the deployment around 6am today.
