ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari said on Monday that a ‘truth and reconciliation commission’ would be formed shortly to bring to justice all those involved in different conspiracies in the past.
Talking to journalists, the president said senior lawyer and human rights activist Asma Jehangir could head the commission.
The statement indicated that the government intended to take action against former intelligence officials like Brig (retd) Imtiaz Ahmed for unveiling stories about toppling of a previous government of the Pakistan People’s Party and killing of former military ruler Gen Ziaul Haq. They have confessed in TV shows to having played a role in different conspiracies.
The formation of the commission was also envisaged in the Charter of Democracy signed by former prime ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif in 2006.
The president said he would consult Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani for an early formation of the commission.
