ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco) has listed as defaulters the President’s Secretariat, Senate, Pakistan Secretariat, Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), several ministries, government departments, municipal town committees and two cantonment boards in Rawalpindi, telling them to clear their dues by Nov 23.
The defaulters’ list was issued on Saturday and included names of private, government and semi-government defaulters who owe a huge amount to the power utility.
Iesco warned that defaulting consumers might face electricity disconnections ‘the same day without further notice or warning’ if they did not pay their bills by the deadline.
According to Iesco, the government of Azad Kashmir owes Rs2.81 billion while Rs1.32 million is outstanding against other AJK government offices and departments in Pakistan.
The power utility also cautioned the Capital Development Authority to pay dues amounting to Rs194.56 million immediately.
The CDA is responsible for the connection to the President’s Secretariat, which owes Rs21.625 million, Senate (Rs15.071m), PWD (Rs100.389m) and the Pakistan Secretariat (Rs24.63m).
The Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology has to pay Rs17.51m; Cantt Board, Rawalpindi, (Rs79.29m); Cantt Board, Chaklala, (Rs165.55m); ministries of education (Rs9.09m); Railways (Rs2.75m); health ministry (Rs2.95m); local government department (Rs2.35m); KANA (Rs2m) and Haj (Rs1.12m); hospitals under the federal government (Rs23.28m); Defence Production Division (Rs43.25m); Frontier Works Organisation (Rs3.18m); NLC (Rs4.682m); CWO (Rs6.45m); FBR (Rs1.18m); Income Tax department (Rs1.15m); FIA (Rs1.64m); Immigration & Passport Directorate (Rs1.5m); Federal Capital Police (Rs19.79m); Chief Commissioner, Islamabad, (Rs16.367m); Punjab Police (Rs11.62m); Punjab Jail & Convict Settlement (Rs2.032m); Sindh House (Rs1.22m); GM Hydel (Rs8.73m), Health, District Government, Rawalpindi, (Rs3.364m); Town Municipal Administration Rawal Town (Rs56.57m), TMA Potohar Town, Rawalpindi, (Rs3.84m), TMA Murree (Rs7.23m) and TMA Jhelum (Rs1.64m).
Iesco has 1.9 million consumers scattered as far away as Jhelum, Rawalpindi, Chakwal, Attock and parts of Azad Kashmir.
Acknowledging that it would be difficult to disconnect power supply to either cantonment boards or the CDA, an Iesco official said that the move was meant to pressure government departments and influential consumers to clear their dues.
Of the eight electricity distribution companies in the country, Iesco is regarded as the most efficient as it has the lowest transmission and distribution losses — 8.6 per cent. Its average billing recovery is more than 95 per cent.
