Tragedy in Jamrud as suicide bomber strikes

A suicide bomber killed at least 48 people when he blew himself up in a crowded mosque in Jamrud on Friday. Police, paramilitary forces and government officials were among the congregation in the mosque near Jamrud town, about 30 km from the Afghan border. The bomber set off his explosives as the imam began prayers, an official said.

    Security forces briefly reopened the key northwest supply route for Western troops in Afghanistan, three days after shutting it to drive militants from the area, officials said. Security forces backed by helicopter gunships, tanks and heavy artillery launched the operation in the Khyber tribal area near Jamrud, the gateway to the famed Khyber Pass linking Pakistan and Afghanistan.
