Colouring the Future
They say hope for the future lies with the next generation. In trying times, the optimism of youth seems like the best antidote. To catch a glimpse of what yet could be, Dawn.com invited school-going children from different socio-economic backgrounds to draw their vision of Pakistan’s future. From an illiterate child in a poor slum to a confident kid at a posh private school, our nation’s youth believes that Pakistan tomorrow is a brighter place.—Feature by Salman Siddiqui.
Colouring the Future

Entering Machar Colony, one of Karachi’s poorest slums, one is struck by the large number of children walking aimlessly through narrow streets. Most can be found playing barefoot in the dirt-filled lanes.

Mohammad Qasim is one such child, who is fortunate enough to attend the local school. In his drawing, he envisions a Pakistan ‘which is clean’. His Machar Colony is not only integrated into Karachi proper, but is also fresh with greenery.

Qasim is a class II student at The Citizens Foundation’s Machar Colony School, Branch I.
