In his latest series, 'Not Made For Each Other,' Ahmed Ali Manganhar adds a painterly quality to images made familiar through kitschy film posters and billboards. The textured paintings include portraits of Waheed Murad, Waheeda Rehman, Guru Dutt, Babra Sharif and other Bollywood and Lollywood greats. Through clever juxtapositions and an intense use of colour, Manganhar disrupts what he calls the 'central myth' of cinema and interrogates the perceived truth of romantic love. By grappling with these themes, the artist hopes to challenge the politics of contemporary Pakistani art, which is increasingly engaged with the war against terror. (Photography: Eefa Khalid)
