KARACHI: The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has unanimously rejected the idea of two holidays in a week in its meeting held at the Federation House on Wednesday.

The FPCCI executive committee meeting simultaneously in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad via video conferencing facility was attended by an overwhelming majority of members. They discussed at length the pros and cons of the two days holiday in a week and passed a unanimous resolution rejecting the government plan.

It was further resolved that the current load management programme with respect to gas and electricity initiated by the government should be implemented in consultation with the FPCCI.

It was decided that the member trade bodies shall provide to FPCCI the impact two weekly offs on domestic production, non-fulfilment of export targets, increase in cost of production and loss to the government revenue.

They should also submit their recommendations regarding efficient use of available gas and electricity resources, including production hours in their respective sectors and territories.

FPCCI president Sultan Ahmed Chawla addressing the executive committee meeting said whether the five days working week was applicable on the government sector only or on both the government and the private sector, the overall productivity would be affected.

Chawla said implementing the proposal of a five day working week would lead to drop in production.
