As I approach the turnstiles at the Karachi Race Club (KRC), I see two young men exchanging one-hundred-rupee notes. I ask them if they are punters and one of them nervously replies, ‘No… I’m just here to enjoy the races.’ Despite its remote location at Safoorah Goth, on Sundays the KRC turns into a paradise for horse lovers, bookies, and gamblers. The races and the betting comprise a tradition that has been handed down from generation to generation.
