MOVIE: The Hole

A psychological thriller with a shocking twist to its ending, The Hole tells the story of four missing teenagers through survivor Liz’s tormented accounts. Taking advantage of a trip organised by their school, Liz (Thora Birch), Mike (Desmond Harrington), Frankie (Kiera Knightly) and Geoff (Lawrence Fox) decide to disappear on their own for a couple of days to a temporary life of seclusion and independence in an underground hideout arranged by their mastermind friend Martin (Daniel Brocklebark).

What they are unaware of is that their little party is soon to be spoilt as they discover the door locked over their heads. With nothing to do but wait and pray, tensions mount, fear heightens as their food and light run out and the darkness brings with it the horror of death.

Retold by Liz to her counsellor, this seemingly terrifying and unfortunate tragedy is laden with purpose and scheming. For four friends that readily agreed to spend a night by themselves underground, one held a secret throughout the nightmare that jeopardised their lives.

Liz’s post-trauma therapist pieces the puzzle back together and discovers the haunting reality of three unwilling prisoners and victims. The Hole is told in abrupt, quick scenes that bring out the realism and it just might have revolutionised its genre. A must-see for all fans of teen thriller flicks.
