As the teacher entered the room the class fell silent. But from the flushed faces the teacher could make out that the students were excited about something. On encouragement she was told that they were discussing their plans for the forthcoming Mother’s Day — what they would get their mothers and what they would do for them. Sensing their eagerness to go ahead with the discussion, the teacher allowed them to continue with what they had on mind, but on the condition that she be included in the discussion. Listening to the children’s plans she felt like going home, hugging her own mother and telling her how much she loved her. She had done it so many times, but never had enough of it. In her younger days Mother’s Day was not celebrated — not at least in our part of the world — though it made no difference as children took every opportunity to tell their mothers how much they loved them.
Mother’s Day is celebrated to make the mothers feel how important and special they are. Mothers are an embodiment of love and their love for their children is matchless. There is no need to tell anyone what mothers do for us. We might not always show it through our actions; might even sometimes take them for granted or ignore them but in our hearts we all know what place they hold in our lives. Not one of us can deny that we owe our very existence to them — the way they took care of us when we were helpless little babies, teaching us to eat, walk and talk, encouraging us in all our endeavours and supporting us in our time of need. Their support and care does not stop as we grow old, and we continue to (though unconsciously) look forward to it.
This Mother’s Day let us all resolve to make our mothers feel very special and take care of them as much as we can throughout the year. It feels so good to hug them at least once a day and tell them what they mean to us.
So what are you waiting for; go give Mom a big hug.
