Hey guys, here is an interesting book to enjoy. It is called Bedknobs and Broomsticks by Mary Norton, author of the famous The borrowers. Set in the 20s, this book is about three children Carey (10 years old), her brother Charles (eight years old) and the youngest Paul (six years). These three are sent to live with their old aunt in Bedfordshire, who lives in a big house with Elizabeth, the house maid.
Every thing goes smoothly until their neighbour, Miss Price, hurts her ankle. No one knows how she hurt it, but Paul the youngest while helping Miss Price, knew her secret and so the other two also got to know about her. Miss Price is a witch — a nice one.
To stop them from telling her secret, she gives them a magic bedknob which can help them fly when fixed on the bed. The bed with the bedknob can take them wherever the three want to. They have lots of adventure until they reach London, where they are caught by the police. They have a narrow brush with death as they go to Ueepee, an island in the Pacific and meet the cannibals but Miss Price help them come back safely. That is where a twist comes in. Elizabeth is very angry to find them soaked and they are sent back.
After two years, they get to stay with Miss Price in summer. They came to know that their aunt has died and her furniture sold but the bed is taken by Miss Price. They go back in history and arrive at the time of the Great London Fire (1666) and try to warn the people and come back with a man Mr Jones whom Miss Price later marries and goes with him in his time.
Overall, an interesting story, in which you can learn a lot of lessons for life, such as the difference between a spell and a charm, the reasons why people cheat and give a lesson of love. So what are you waiting for, grab this classic book and let Miss Price tell you the reason why witches live in dens?
