Hi kids!

I cannot imagine anyone not being touched by what is going on in the country these days. Emergency rule, martial law, general elections, democracy, freedom of expression, the right to know and gather together a political rally — all must be new words and terms for many of you. You must also be feeling the ban on TV channels that elders in the family are talking about.

It is good to be aware of what is happening in your country, though it is not always possible to make sense of the events taking place and to form an opinion on it all. To hear someone say, or read in the paper that such and such leader is wrong or has done this wrong or right can be very confusing.

It is best that you read the paper, the complete stories and comments, not just the headlines, with the help of an elder. Do ask to be explained what is happening and where it may all be going if you don’t know what to make of it. You should also read Pakistan’s 60 years of history and get to know a bit more about the past leaders. This way you will get some understanding of what is happening. Your parents, elders in the family or teachers are the best guides on how best someone your age should be a part of the ongoing political process.

Unfortunately, violence has taken a terrible toll of politics. Violence has gained strength because politics has weakened; political parties have not done their homework or they have not been allowed to do so. Doing good politics is the only way to stop the violence, as it is done in many countries where the people elect their leaders in elections and allow them to run the government for an allotted time.

This is called democracy, and there is no reason why it should not work in our country. Democratic process means that people alone can decide who should rule them and for how long.

I hope this helps answer some of the questions that you have in your minds.

See you next week.

Bye!

Ed
