Movie: Nancy Drew

Nancy Drew is based on the resourceful and mystery loving protagonist of the popular book series of the same name; the target audience being the preteen and early teen crowd. Previously, four Nancy Drew films were released in the late 1930s. Multiple television series based on Nancy Drew have also been on air from time to time.

The movie opens with Nancy Drew (Emma Roberts, niece of Julia Roberts) solving a local crime and earning praise from the people of her town for her super sleuthing abilities. Soon after, she has to move with her lawyer father Carson Drew (Tate Donovan) to Los Angeles from River Heights. Her father is concerned about her safety and gets her to promise to stay away from dangerous mysteries. However, what her father doesn’t know is that while choosing a house in LA, Nancy picked the one that had an unsolved mystery attached to it. Some years ago, Dehlia Draycott (Laura Harring), a famous movie star, lived in the same house. Nancy is intrigued by Dehlia’s case because of her mysterious disappearance and death and decides to dig deeper into the whodunit. In the meantime, Nancy Drew also starts school in LA where she has problems fitting in because of her well mannered demeanour and old fashioned wardrobe.

While Emma Roberts carries the role of Nancy Drew with a passable degree of aplomb; it is the plot and trite jokes that cause the movie to sink as a whole. The supporting cast of the movie doesn't demonstrate much talent for the project. At the end of the day, Nancy Drew comes across as a mystery movie that will easily be forgotten. The many fans of the book series will probably be the only ones who will end up watching it!
