Super sis

Dear Super Sis,
By profession my mother is a zoologist and I have not studied science after my matriculation. The main problem is that whenever I ask her any question related to science, fiction, art or daily life she always says, “you don’t know such a simple thing” and “don’t ask stupid questions”. Dear sis please tell me is she doing the right thing? I don’t know whether she is right or wrong but I am always hurt and feel frustrated thinking that why my mother rebukes me; as a result I start being aggressive.

Warda

Warda, I can see where you’re coming from but it would be rude and unfair to pass judgements about your mother. Moms already carry the huge burden of bringing us up, grooming and guiding us and taking care of us; and to claim at the end of it all that your mom is unfair would be a very shallow thing indeed.

You feel that your mom dismisses you every time you ask her general knowledge questions. Well, may be she was busy or preoccupied when you approached her with such stuff and that’s why she behaved the way she did. Or perhaps she feels that the questions are too easy and you should know the answers to them yourself. Anyway, there is no need to feel remorseful. She is, after all, your mom, and you love her more than anything in the world. If you feel that you’re not getting all your answers from her, well, have you tried to compensate for things on your own?

You haven’t written to me about ever reading up on things you are curious about. Go on to different websites like National Geographic or Discovery. Expand your mental faculties; watch TV programmes that cater to hungry minds and you will find most of your answers there. And the next time you want to ask your mom something, you can start off by sharing some new stuff you discovered (like did you know there is a type of squid called the Vampire Squid and it has got an amazing camouflage technique?). You can tell your mom what you discovered lately and then conversationally ask her about something else. Mind you, go to her when she is not busy with work.

Once she notices the effort you have been putting in to increase your knowledge, she will change the way she behaves in her own good time.

Lastly, don’t you EVER make excuses for acting aggressively towards your mother, young lady, and behave yourself. As it is, children are not an easy responsibility on their parents and to top it off, if you have been behaving rudely — well, it is probably the most shameful thing in the world.

Dear Super Sis
I want to learn how to play the piano. I checked out the Internet but the lessons require money or personal details. Please give me some piano learning websites which are free of cost. Thanks.

MB.

MB, my favourite website in this regard is www.musicplay.com. The lessons are free and they quickly take you from scratch towards independent play. Besides, they are accompanied by audio files that help you learn easily. You will also learn the basics of reading and writing sheet music here. Go check it out.

You should also take a trip to your closest musical instruments store and ask them for piano lesson CDs or cassettes. They usually have those and you will find them useful. Have fun!
