MOVIE: A bridge to Terabithia

By Taimur Saleem

Disney’s A Bridge to Terabithia stars Jesse Aaron (Josh Hutcherson), a shy ten-year-old boy hailing from a family of five children. His parents spend their days worrying about making ends meet. Aaron loves to paint and yearns for his father’s company and attention. He spends his summer getting into shape for a race at school. However, he is surprised out of his wits when Leslie Burke (AnnaSophia Robb), the new girl at school, beats him in the race.

Initially Aaron ignores Leslie as he is still overcoming the shock of losing the race to a girl. But gradually, Leslie’s candid mannerisms and energetic spirit win Aaron over. Leslie is an only child whose parents are much well off than Aaron’s. Despite the difference in their backgrounds, the two children become fast friends. Their days are spent in trips to the nearby forest where they let their imagination run wild. They conjure up the amazing world of Terabithia; a fantasy kingdom full of magical creatures and warriors. Terabithia provides a wonderful escape to Leslie and Aaron from the pressures of their daily lives and it also strengthens their bond of friendship. However, tragedy strikes when Leslie dies in an accident while swinging on a rope across the stream in the forest. Aaron is naturally devastated by the loss but learns to cope with the bereavement of Leslie — his friend who gave him the wonderful gift of imagination.

A Bridge to Terabithia is based on Katherine Paterson’s Newbery Medal winning book of the same name. While on the surface, A Bridge to Terabithia may appear a fantasy film but its deeper undertones radiate the important message of friendship and courage. AnnaSophia Robb is the real star of the movie as she captivates the audience with the verve and innocence of her acting. All in all, A Bridge to Terabithia is a touching film for the whole family.
