Public speaking

Problem: My friends tell me, that although I have good points to discuss in my speech, there’s something missing in my delivery, and I leave a very unimpressive/boring image in terms of language. I don’t think it’s about vocabulary as I make it a point to use difficult words in my speech, then what can it be?

Solution: When people are told about having problems with their language, they end up concluding that there is something wrong with their vocabulary and end up doing what you said you do. Effective communication is more than using ‘heavy-duty-vocabulary’. It’s about being crisp and clear…

Yes! Crisp and Clear! Doesn’t this sound interesting? Although there is no heavy duty word in the sentence, yet it leaves a striking impression. There are a number of aspects you can look into, and avoid making such mistakes and therefore improve on your delivery.

The first mistake most people make is use the same word for starting the next sentence. For example “… and I went there. And he said “Go.” And I said “No.” And then he got angry. And I said: “Why are you angry?” And he said, “You don’t listen to me.” And I said, “Why should I?” And then…

Similar to this is the use of pet words as “like”, “you know”, “...and stuff like that”, “etc”; which again leaves a very bad impression on your audience.

Many aspects can be highlighted here to explain how one can improve on his/her language skills as this is a very broad issue. Perhaps, on some other issue I will continue with what more can you do to have a greater impact with your speech.
