And there was none…

By Injila Asim

Looking all around myself, I felt something strange. The atmosphere was also wet and the wind was chilly. I was trying hard to sleep but there were no signs of drowsiness.

It was midnight and everyone had gone to a wedding. I was alone at home with the maid who was fast asleep. I never enjoyed gatherings and crowded places, so I always stayed at home. I’m a scary pant but I never felt scared at home. However, at this hour, I did feel a strange air around me.

My heart was beating, fast, I squinted nervously. I stood and reached for the windows. As I went to it, the gushing wind pushed it open. I briskly closed it and went to bed. I don’t know why I was feeling nervous and insecure even in my room. Although I had closed the windows, suddenly a heavy blow came and my hair flew high. Now, my terror grew. I stood against a wall, as if guarding my back. Accidentally a piece of hail flew, not noticing it, my heart bumped at the sound and I left the room, to the staircase and then to the lounge and rushed towards the servant quarter, I ….ran towards it. It was usually locked, but to my luck, it wasn’t tonight. I pushed the door and started to yell, “Alia, wake up! Hurry up!” Silence. I thought she wasn’t there then someone touched my shoulder. I jumped, slanted.

“What’s the matter?” Asked the maid a little confused.

“Oh! Nothing, I think there’s something in my room… but…” I tried to speak but she broke my words. “Oh it’s too late now. Go to sleep. You need some rest.”

My hair stood up. ‘Goosebump’. I thought, comforting myself. I switched on the TV and was quiet settled with it. Suddenly something broke the peace — I felt someone staring at me. But I found no one in the room. I turned around and saw an apparition of a lady. I was stunned.

I tried to shout, but no sound came. I tried to run-but my legs made no movement. I started shivering. After a minute or two, I realised there was nothing. Was it my imagination? Suddenly I heard a low voice as if someone was crying. I turned and saw a child — “Aaaaaaaahhh!” I shouted.

Oh it was just a dream! “Thank God.” I said. Then suddenly a thought struck my mind. I stared at the clock. It was 12:30am. I knew that my parents and my siblings had to go to a party at 10:00pm and it was midnight!

Shivering from head to toe, I moved up and went to the lounge, no one, to the kitchen, no one. To my sis’ room, to my brothers, to the dinning hall and finally to my parents room. To my horror and bad luck…there was none…
