The mummy strikes

By Mahreen Ahmed

“Wow, so cool!” exclaimed Alina to herself. She was surfing the net. It was a site on ancient Egypt. She was looking at an Egyptian mummy buried thousands of years ago inside a tomb. She clicked the coffin and it enlarged, she could almost feel herself there standing beside the coffin.

Alina was really thrilled; she thought: what a cool site this was. With a click of her mouse she could actually travel back in time and “visit” ancient places and the pyramids of Egypt. Not only Egypt, but any country she wanted to!Alina’s school teacher had given her an assignment to gather information about Egyptian civilisation; this assignment had actually fascinated her. So she kept clicking the mouse and going deeper and deeper into the site. Now she clicked the button which said, ‘Buried treasure’. “Incredible!” said Alina to herself when she saw the sparkling and gleaming jewels. She stared at them in awe and anticipation.

How she wished she could persuade her parents to take her to Egypt to see the pyramids, and all other fascinating things of the ancient Egyptian civilisation. Then perhaps she could actually visit all the historical places instead of seeing them on the Net as she was doing now.It was well past midnight, but she had lost all track of time.

Alina now entered the burial chamber where the mummies had been buried.

The screen showed a beautiful coffin, on the side of it lay a beetle-like bug; it was emerald-green called the Jewel Scarab.

Alina knew that ancient Egyptians considered scarabs sacred, she had read somewhere that they would stud them on the coffins to safeguard them. “As if a dead scarab would suddenly come to life and bite the intruder,” thought Alina.

Alina’s attention was diverted by the mummy inside a coffin whose one hand was outside it. She clicked on the mummy. Suddenly the computer screen went black. And a strange voice said, “I have invaded your computer.” Alina stared at the screen in bewilderment as it turned bright yellow and a real mummy crawled over the screen. It was the same mummy which Alina had been watching! She gasped.

Her right hand clutched the mouse in order to click on the mummy to make it small again. But her hands were trembling fiercely and she could not control it. Suddenly a croaky voice said, “How dare you invade my territory? Don’t you know I don’t let anyone invade it!”

“B….but I did not invade you… your… I mean I was just collecting information about you through the Net,” said Alina with great difficulty.

“You disturbed the dead,” said the mummy.

“But you can’t be real,” said Alina gathering a little courage. The mummy started laughing ferociously, and then spoke, “Thank you for letting me out, now I will destroy all the computers and the so-called information stored in them and will bring your race back to the ancient times… … ha ha ha!”

Though Alina was dead-scared she was thinking fast. She had to do something in order to get rid of this mummy and to stop it from destroying all the computers and valuable information.

“Oh you can’t do anything, because before you do I will wipe you out,” saying this Alina bent down to switch off the computer as the switch was located on the floor.

As she did so she fell to the floor with a thud. For a few seconds all she could see were stars, but she quickly recovered and looked at her computer-screen, strangely everything felt normal. And there back in its coffin was the mummy but its hand was no more outside the coffin!

Alina was freaked a bit to see the change, “Have I scared the mummy? Or was it just a dream?” Alina wondered. She preferred to think that she had saved the world and chuckled to herself. Saying this she closed the web-site and shut-down the computer and went to sleep dreaming that she was the Queen Cleopatra of Ancient Egypt!
