There once lived a fisherman with his wife near the sea and his resources were scanty. Everyday he used to go out to the sea to catch fish, but quite often he would not succeed in catching any fish and return empty handed in the evening. That night they would have to sleep without any food.
One day while he was out as usual he managed to catch a big fish, and to his surprise the fish began to talk and said that it was the king of all the fishes and if the kind man would throw the fish back into the water three of his wishes would be granted.
The fisherman was glad and let go of the fish. When he told this to his wife she too was delighted and they both began to think what to wish for. Meanwhile the man felt hungry and, without thinking, wished for a sausage. And lo and behold! There on the table was a plate filled with sausages.
On seeing this, the wife got angry and called him silly and reminded him that he had wasted one of the wishes. Then she wished that the sausage would go and stick to his nose. This wish was also granted and the fisherman called his wife sillier than him. Now two of the wishes had been wasted and they were left with only one wish. But the third wish had to be used to take off the sausage from the fisherman’s nose as there was no other way that it could be removed.
Later, the two of them went to bed without any wishes.
