Breaking a promise

By Haya Fatima Khan

Ali and Zain were good friends. Ali’s father had promised him a mobile phone if he passed his exams. As Ali and Zain came into the classroom, the teacher handed them their results. Ali jumped with excitement. He had got good marks in all subjects and secured the first position. Zain got really jealous as he had just managed to pass.

The next day Ali’s father gave him a mobile set and said to him, “Beta promise me you will never lend this mobile to anybody else, not even to your best friends.” The next day Ali took it to school to show it to his friends. When Zain saw it, he just wanted to use the mobile. He asked Ali, “can you lend me that?”

Ali strictly said “No, I have promised my father I will not give it to anyone.”

Zain said, “Who cares, I will just keep it for a period or two — that’s all please.”

Listening to this, Ali gave his mobile to Zain, who took it away and started showing it to everyone, and breaking his promise kept the mobile with him for the whole day. The next day Zain did the same and kept the mobile for the whole day. He didn’t even return it after school and took it home. Ali was really puzzled. And when his father came

to know that he had given his mobile to a friend he dressed down Ali as to why he had broken his promise.

The next day Ali angrily asked Zain to return his mobile.

Zain said “Oh, you mean my mobile!”

Ali got angrier.

Zain said “Look; now everybody thinks that it was my mobile as it was with me for the last two days — So buzz off.”

Ali was left with no alternative but to complain to the teacher about the misdeed. As a result Zain was punished for one whole month. Ali got his phone back but was also reprimanded by the teacher for bringing the mobile to school.

So friends, never ever break a promise. Otherwise you too will suffer like Ali and Zain.
