True friendship

By Fatima Zaheer

It was a bright sunny morning. The sunrays were pouring in through my bedroom windows. This was when I awoke but I still lay in bed because I felt a little lazy. Some time later I fell asleep again and then my mother came to wake me up.

“Fatima, wake up. It’s really late. Don’t you have to get ready to go to the airport? Do you remember that your dear friend Sarah is coming from America today at 10 o’clock?” my mother said while knocking at the door.

I looked at my clock. Oh my God! was all I could think at that time. It was already 8:30. I hurriedly got ready, went down to have breakfast and left with the driver for the airport. It took me almost one hour to reach there and waited there for Sarah to come out.

When we were in college Sarah had left London because her father had decided to move to America. It had been almost five years since she had left, but I was still in contact with her through the Internet and e-mails. It had been five years since we met but still she was my best friend.

At last she came out and I hurriedly went towards her to give her a big hug. We went to have coffee together and then I took her home. She met my mother sat and chatted for a while and then went to the guest room to take some rest and I went up to my room to work on my project and to study because I knew that I wouldn’t be able to study while Sarah was there. Sarah was quite tired and so slept almost the whole day. The next day we went out for sightseeing; Sarah also shopped for her family. We had a great time. The next day was Monday I had to go to the university. I knew that while I was at the university Sarah felt quite bored, so the next day I asked her to accompany me to the university where she could meet my friends.

The following day I took Sarah to the university with me. I showed her around and she also met my friends. She was very shy to meet them but she enjoyed the visit to the university.

It had been almost two weeks that Sarah had come to England to visit me. She wanted to go back to America the following week but I convinced her to stay two more weeks. She accepted it and decided to extend her stay. But suddenly I started to change, my attitude started to change. My friends told me that Sarah was such a stinker and cheapster and I started to believe what they said.

One day I was talking on the phone. “Yes, yeah, Now I realise that Sarah is a cheapster and a stinker. But what can I do; I asked her to prolong her stay, and now she will be staying for two more weeks,” I said.

I did not know at that time that Sarah had been listening to my conversation. She began crying. I heard it and asked her what had happened (just for sympathy) and in reply she said, “Like you don’t know.” She at once went to her room and packed to leave the same night.

She had left for the airport when my mother asked me why Sarah had left so early. I told her about my conversation and how Sarah had been listening to it. My mother then told me that what I had done was not right. This was the same Sarah who used to be my best friend, who helped me in all my troubles and this was how I repaid her. This was when I realised what a stupid thing I had done. Then my mother said, “It’s probably too late but still we can try.”

We left for the airport and I saw her sitting in the waiting lounge sobbing quietly. I went to her and told her how stupid I was to pay heed to what my other friends said rather than keep in mind the great times that we had together. She was such a kind-hearted and nice girl that she immediately forgave me.

I realised that true friends always remain true to you no matter how much you hurt them but other friends who seem to be loyal to you will always try to put you on the wrong path and cause trouble for you. So watch out!
