Jungle fire

By Tehrima Syed

Dear Human Beings,

Let me tell you a story. Once there was a deer called Shadow. When he was born he had a kind mother and a caring father. They lived in one of the most beautiful parts of grassland. When Shadow was ten, he used to go around the grassland admiring the place. He used to swim in the river of crystal clear water. Once when he was swimming he found a gem. Not knowing what it was, he showed it to his Grandma, Lee. Grandma Lee was a wise, old deer. When she examined the queer round-shaped object, she told him that it was a pearl. She said that pearls are beautiful jewels found in the shells under the sea or river bodies. She then went on to predicting the future as she was a psychic. She gave the pearl back to Shadow and said: “This pearl connects me and you, never forget it”

Then, she abruptly ran out of her little grass hut. Shadow was very confused about what had happened. He was deep in thought when he heard a stampede. He ran out to check what it was. Then, there he saw hundreds of humans with fire-torches in their hands. They were setting the grassland on fire! He ran home and got to know that his mother, Nat, had expired due to the smoke from the near-by fire. He and his dad ran to find Shadow’s grandma. They found her fleeing from the people who were causing the fire. Then in a few minutes, the whole grassland was ablaze. Suddenly, a log from a tree broke and fell on Grandma Lee! He and his father pushed her away from the blazing tree but, they were too late. Shadow then related to what his grandma has said about the mystical pearl.

His father picked Shadow but his leg got caught fast in a trap. Shadow tried to pull him out, but the trap was too strong for him, he seemed to be bleeding endlessly. Second by second he seemed to grow weak. Shadow watched helplessly as his father’s last breath escaped from him. Young Shadow ran in search for safety. He was caught and later adopted by a rich lady. Though she really cared for him, he still dreams of running in the wild, breathing the fresh air, longing to have the cool breeze splash against his furry face.

How do I know this? I do, because this was my story. That sad, unlucky deer... was me.

I miss my grandma. All that connects us today is a delicate and precious pearl. I hope all of you learnt from this story. Please...try and stop this insanity. Like me, innumerable other innocent animals are losing their loved ones’ lives and freedom every second. For me, it may be too late for things to mend, as my entire family has been wiped out. Within the blink of an eye, the entire lush green grassland was turned to ashes. Please for our sake, stand up and grant us security from savages. Our future is dependant on you and your future is dependant upon us... think about it.

Shattered and broken,
Shadow
