I Fooled Him Finally

By Saima Ilahi

“Dear father, don’t leave me alone… I need you in my life.” He was astonished to receive that message and replied, “Who are you? I am not your father!”

“I am your 10-year-old daughter… First mother left us and now you are leaving me… dear father if you don’t return home I’ll leave home in search of you,” messaged the girl.

He was really upset so instead of messaging he decided to call the strange messenger. When she heard the phone ring she immediately received it and started moaning like a real baby. He thought how a young boy, who was not even married, can by labelled by a girl as her father.

Wait, wait… before reaching to the conclusion let me tell you the actual story from the beginning. Here’s how it started.

* * *

“Dear sister your story has been published,” announced my younger brother loudly. Leaving everything aside I ran to see my first story in Young World. As soon as I snatched the magazine and started turning the pages my brother pronounced loudly “April fool ha-ha…” He had made me fool again because my story had not been published. I sent my first story to Young World on the subject of April Fool and was expecting to see it in print. My younger brother would tease me and had made me a fool for the 57th time.

As for himself, he self-assuredly used to say that no one could ever make him a fool. I challenged him and to this he laughed so loudly that I was unable to hear anything for a few minutes. Another astonishing thing was my mother’s angry look. When I regained my hearing my sister told me why my mother was angry. She wanted to tell me of the phone that I failed to attend. He laughed at me again; I could not bear his giggles any longer hence I boxed him hard.

A few weeks later my brother left for Islamabad to live with my elder brother. At that time I did not have my own mobile. I got it when I started going to the university. When I got back from university in the evening and was about to share my mobile number with my brothers an evil idea struck me.

Consequently, I, in the guise of a 10-year-old-girl, pretended to be his daughter who was disheartened and discouraged by family dispute and who longed for parental attention.

My brother cares a lot for others and therefore got saddened for the strange girl who needed help because he was not her father.

“I am not your father, why don’t you understand,” my brother reacted angrily when the girl (I) repeatedly addressed him as father. The girl threatened him to eat bitter gourd if he did not return home. My brother showed no concern this time and said, “I don’t care whether you eat bitter gourd or garlic I am going to disconnect the call right now,” and he disconnected.

I knew how bad he would be feeling for the little girl so to expose my real identity I called him. He cut it off several time but finally he took my call. “April foooooo…l, I made you a fool, I did it.” I claimed happily. He sighed a sigh of relief and said, “I knew it was you,” trying to hide the embarrassment. He realised moreover that it is not good to play pranks as it might sometimes hurt psychologically.
