Teaching is a virtuous and saintly occupation, and teachers are the saints who deliver education and etiquette round the world. Teachers are our spiritual parents. Parents bring up their children and teachers form their characters. It is a teacher who creates an astronaut, a doctor or any other elevated personality. According to Plato a teacher is the doctor of the mind. Teachers are always ready to teach and answer their students’ questions.
Whenever a student succeeds in education, it is a teacher who is much more proud of his students than parents are. It is a true teacher who dedicates his entire life to this profession and to the formation of good citizens. He tries to make his students far better than he is but unfortunately, we as students have forgotten that the only thing that teachers expect from us through the education they have given is respect.
Teachers deserve a good pay, they deserve benefits, they deserve recognition and credit for the wonderful job they do for the community. Respect to them is earned by effort, building relationships and most importantly trust and excellent teaching is worthy of respect. Teachers are guides and they deserve our due respect. An ancient Sanskrit phrase says Acharya devo bhavo or “Treat your teacher as you treat God”. Of course, most people would scoff at this statement. Yet far from treating teachers as God, few children and parents give teachers the respect they deserve.
Our teachers play an important role in shaping the minds of our youth, by engaging, inspiring and challenging them. Teachers’ skills deserve greater respect. It’s time we all recognise that teachers are the key to high standards and achievement in our schools. We will build upon what we learn by our teachers. It means that we should not make jokes or negative remarks about the ability, skills or other attributes of our teachers.
Prophets, saints and sages all were teachers and God has regarded them as the lighthouses that shine as the sun for us. We must remember that each person in the world has a valuable role to fulfil, whether we agree with their way of doing it or not and it is time that teachers get the respect that they deserve!
