“No Ali, no,” mom said. “But why! What have I done wrong? You allowed Mahmood Bhayya to go. So why not me,” I said.
“Ali you are not allowed to go to the mela and that’s final. Plus Mahmood Bhayya is much older than you are. Now go to your room and complete your homework,” mom said.
I shook my head with sheer disappointment and proceeded towards my room. “Why does this happen to me only, why am I not allowed to do the things I want to do?” I said to myself. Suddenly an idea struck my mind. My evil mind started working. I thought of lying to my parents and going to the mela. Later that night at dinner, I rushed to the dining table first and acquired my place right next to my mother. “Ali beta, try to understand what I am trying to say. It’s a very big carnival and if you get lost then… Beta there is no one to accompany you. Next time I will make sure that I will take you to the mela.” mom said.
“I understand I just wanted to ask you that can I go to my friend Ahmed’s house,” I said.
“Of course, Ali, since you have been a good boy I suppose you deserve to go.”
I was happy at last I would be able to go to the mela without anyone knowing about it.
The next day after arriving from school I left for the mela, under the pretext of going to my friend’s place. It was a huge mela and it was set-up at a very huge area with thousands of people enjoying themselves. There were all kinds of rides there and my favourite dodge’em car was there too. I was now more than eager to go inside. I bought the ticket and immediately rushed inside. I started exploring the mela. I played my favourite games, took my favourite rides.
I was tired I decided to leave. But then, suddenly, I realised that I had no clue where the exit gate was, as the crowd was huge and the area was very big.
I tried moving here and there in search for the way out. The huge crowd was getting on my nerves which even made me more scared. I heard a voice behind talking about kidnapping a child and selling him as a slave. I got scared. I slowly started moving from there so that I didn’t get noticed. But one of those guys saw me and thought they found a lottery ticket and started following me. I turned back and seeing them behind me I got scared and started running.
Suddenly I banged into a fellow and fell down on the ground. When I saw the face of the man I was extremely shocked. The person with whom I collided was none other than my own uncle (my mamoon). “Ali, what are you doing here alone?” He asked
I looked for those kidnappers but they were nowhere to be seen.
“There is no time to give you details about my escapade; can you please drop me home?” I said.
When I reached home I told my mother about what had happened and got a good beating and scolding for my actions but I realised one thing that your elders are always right.
