Super Sis

Dear Super Sis,

I am 10 years old. I live in a bungalow which is opposite to a playground. Children mostly play cricket in this ground. On Sundays they play cricket and the ball by mistake comes in our home. To retrieve the ball, they knock at our main gate and ring our bell many times. This disturbs us every Sunday morning. Our house is one unit and we spend most of our time upstairs and the ball usually falls in the garage, and we have to go down to give them the ball. These children are very rude; they even broke our door bell two or three times.

Please tell me what to do.
Worried

Dear dear, your problem really is one of a kind. Okay, Worried, you must tackle this smartly. We all know very well that there are very few play grounds in the city and if children are playing in a public place, you cannot and should not forbid them to do so. Refusing to give them their ball won’t work either because they will just keep on ringing your bell until you respond. Besides, it would be awfully cruel to confiscate their stuff, wouldn’t it?

So yes, it is you who will have to make a few changes to avoid getting bothered by these children. I can imagine that the ball tends to fly over your front wall and comes into your garage every Sunday, right? Try this: study the size of the exposed part of the front wall and accordingly, invest in a soft mesh sheet (plastic or cloth) that can be draped all the way from the top to the bottom of that exposed area. Mesh sheets are easily available at wholesale stores in the main city. You can just ask your folks to take you there and buy you a big piece of mesh sheet.

You can then install one end of the mesh at a higher level and drape the rest over the exposed part of your garage and all the way out. I am crudely simulating what the effect can possibly be like on part of a typical one-unit house. Of course your house is bound to be different and the mesh will have to be draped differently, perhaps from the balcony and over the front wall of the bungalow. But the happy bit is, it will definitely keep the ball out for good and the mesh won’t be a hurdle in any manner either.

I also know people who have prevented similar incidents from occurring by using long drapes/chiks over their balconies and garages. However, chiks have to be customised according to your requirements and are relatively expensive as well. You could suggest it to your folks and see if they agree. If they don’t, the soft mesh sheet should do just find. Good luck!
