Not many people know that the Canadian duo Josh, comprising Qurram Hussain (Q) and Rupinder Magon (Rup), first appeared on the music scene with the album entitled Mein Hoon Tanha. However, their album which rocked the music scene was Kabhi in 2004, which comprised soul ballads along with desi bhangra stuff in collaboration with the likes of Sukhbir and Apache Indian. After treating us with some excellent collaborated hits with Nelly Furtado and Rishi Rich in recent times, they have finally released their highly anticipated album Mausam.
A twin guitar kicks off ‘Mahivey’. This one reminds me more of ‘Baan Farkay’ feat Sukhbir from their previous album, featuring a pure desi chorus. The background vocals conjure up a typical bhangra friendly atmosphere with desi melody instruments acting in and around a strong Q vocal. ‘Mahi vey mahi arz karan’, stunning track! Remixed version of the track is one of the major highlights of the album, courtesy RDB.
The title track featuring the sounding elegant Erin, kicks off with a distorted intro and then comes the wicked heavenly humming of legend Zubeida Khanum and you think it is some old Pakistani melody but then the jagged guitar chords thrust in and you could listen to the boys. It is a remake of an instant hit of 70s. The track is fuelled with gentle guitar waves and delicate tabla sounds. ‘Rock your body’, is a pure rock ’n’ roll gem where JoJoe controls the microphone. The refurbished version of the track is masterfully produced by the Guru himself, Rishi Rich. The bhangra part features the traditional ‘oye hoye’ and ‘balle balle’ with lots of clapping alongside a rousing chorus while the western half is decorated with subtle guitar and keyboard notes.
‘Teri Ankhon’ mellows down the mood in the nick of time, swapping the loud beats with a soulful heart-rending tune. The application of guitar and violin on this one is simply groovy. ‘Ajnabi’ is the tale of friendship of the duo. Production is almost flawless on this track too and so is the vocal performance. ‘Nasha pyar da’, is a wicked bhangra punk, featuring Smurfette while its remixed version is done by guys from Montreal doing a French remix. ‘Munn say poocho’, is another fascinating number while the album ends with ‘Aaj ke din’.
Josh’s new album caters to fans of almost every music territory and it is definitely a cousin of Kabhi. It’s definitely a must-have CD!
