Valentine’s Day party

Valentine’s Day is a great time to have a themed party! Fun and vibrant colours, tasty treats, and plenty of warm fuzzy feelings make for a great get-to-gether. Help prepare treats as well as assist in the decorating process and you’ll have tons of fun just getting it all set up!

Festive invitations: The colours for this holiday are traditionally red, pink and white. However, we’ve also seen purple and even pale blue enter into the picture recently. Whatever colour you choose, pick a fun card stock or colourful construction paper to make your invites. Be creative by cutting out hearts from patterned paper or using holiday heart stickers to decorate your invitations. You can just let your imagination run wild.

Decorate the place: It’s time to pretty up the place for party time. Blow up some pink, red and white balloons to tape to the walls, doors, and the backs of chairs.

Make festive garland to hang in doorways, on walls and from corner to corner at the ceiling. Here’s how: Cut heart shapes out of paper doilies and red construction paper. Make sure the red hearts are smaller than the doily hearts. Glue the red hearts to the centre of the doilies. Thread a piece of white yarn through the tops of the doilies and tie a loose knot at the top of each to keep its place in line. Tie each heart about three inches apart.

Create a quick centrepiece out of a coffee can covered in red felt. Decorate the outside of the can with pink and white felt hearts and rim the edge with a strip of lace, ribbon or white felt. Place a block of floral foam, standing up, inside the can. Fill can with sand, then insert lollipops into the foam for a quick and tasty centrepiece!

If you have Valentine products that you have collected from school and neighbourhood friends, tape or glue them to your white plastic or paper tablecloth to showcase them. Use red plastic plates, cups, utensils and napkins to set the table.

Fun foods: So that your party isn’t all sweets, put together some heart-shaped sandwiches! Choose whatever fillings you like. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter or cut out the heart with a paring knife.

Fresh red fruits such as apple wedges, strawberries and cherries are great with a pink fruit dip made from an eight–ounce container of yogurt and an eight–ounce package of cream cheese.

To give cookie dough and cake batter a pink tint, add a few drops of red food colouring. Frost cupcakes with pink frosting and decorate with red, white and pink sprinkles, and use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to make cookies. Decorate with red sugar before baking, or use white frosting and red candies after baking. You can even save the decorating for your guests as a fun activity!

Games to play: As your guests arrive, have them play a guessing game. Fill a glass or plastic container with heart candy and have kids guess how many they think are inside. Have them write their name and guess secretly on a piece of paper and put it in a safe place until later. You can hand out trinkets to everyone for playing and award the jar of candy to the child with the closest guess.

We’ve all enjoyed bean bag toss games so make your own festive version by cutting a heart-shaped hole out of the side of a cardboard box. Make your own bean bags by filling zipper sandwich bags with rice or dried beans. Reinforce the seal by taping it shut. You can also jazz them up by making simple felt pouches. Cut two identical squares of red, white or pink felt, and use pinking shears for a fun effect. Hot glue three sides together, and then slide the bag of beans inside. Seal the final edge with hot glue and you’ll have your own bean bags! If you’re feeling really festive, instead of cutting squares, cut heart shapes from felt and follow the same guidelines.

Have a Valentine’s scavenger hunt. Cut heart shapes out of red, white and pink construction paper. Cut only a couple of red ones, several pink, and many white. Hide them around the house, making white more obvious than the pink, and hiding the red fairly well, depending on the age group of your guests. Each colour has a different point level: one point for white, two for pink and three for red. Set a time limit and add up points at the end. You can award small prizes to everyone with a larger prize going to the one with the most points.

Goodie bags: What party is complete without a goodie bag? Most stores have holiday-themed clear bags made specifically for parties. Look for fun trinkets such as heart stickers, red pens and pencils, mini boxes of crayons, little plastic bracelets, heart-shaped sunglasses, lip balms and small candies. Tie the bags with red ribbon or yarn and hand them out as party guests head home.
