The World Wetlands Day is celebrated across the globe each year to mark the date of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar.
This day was celebrated for the first time in 1997 and was an encouraging event, inspiring individuals from every walk of life to use the platform for information sharing, learning and spreading the spirit of the cause.
This year, the Awareness Raising and Communication Unit of Pakistan Wetlands Programme (PWP), an exciting initiative of The Federal Ministry of Environment funded by a consortium of national and international donors, is planning to host a wide array of activities to commemorate the World Wetlands Day from February 10-11 at the Islamabad Club in Islamabad. The international theme for World Wetlands Day 2007 is ‘Wetlands and Fisheries’.
This programme aims to create awareness in people of the importance of wetlands and fisheries. Wetlands Festival’ would provide great opportunity for students, teachers and professionals to participate in a positive mix of activities i.e. education, entertainment and promotion. Similar festivals have been planned for Karachi and Lahore as well.
