I am a 15-year-old girl studying in ‘O’ level final year. I need your help. My financial conditions are not very good and my parents are finding it hard to pay Cambridge fees as I will be appearing for examinations in May. I would like to help my parents with the money crisis. I have good English writing skills and have also written a few articles. I would like to write more to earn money. I would like to ask you the process to become regular writer and what is the amount paid to the writers? Please reply soon as I am in real need of money and writing is my only hope. I can’t see my parents so tense because of me and want to help them out by providing them a helping hand. Desperate
It is really great to come across young motivated people like you who are so eager to study hard and help their parents out. Yes, of course, freelance writing is a pretty solid way to earn money while working from home. While I am not at liberty to disclose the amount that the Dawn pays its contributors, I can tell you that the amount varies with the publication and the type/length of the article.
The best way to start writing is to find out your areas of strength: the topics that interest you, in which you feel that you can write well. Since you are only 15, Young World is an excellent magazine for you to write in. If you have written for YW before, I am sure that the Ed has a fair idea of your writing skills. You can write a letter to her and send in a bunch of ideas that you would like to write about. Wait patiently until you get a reply; do not hound the offices with repeated phone calls. You are bound to get assignments in return.
The other way is to simply mail in any articles that you have written along with your complete name, postal address and phone number. Also, if you do not have a bank account, enclose a person’s title in whose name you would want your pay-cheque to be made. Articles are usually queued up according to preference and time of receipt; it usually takes a few weeks before you will get to see your work in print, provided that it is suitable for the publication.
But if you are really short on cash, I recommend that you take up an alternate means of earning money as well, like doing a couple of home tuitions. Those tend to bring in much-needed cash for students. Hang in there and good luck!
Dear Super Sis I had been a very good boy up to class seven. But now I think I am a sinful person. Worried Boy
Child, it is a blessed day on which thou hast gathered here for thy confession. May the peace of the Good Lord be with you. However, since thou hast not revealed the precise sin that thou indulgest in, there is little that I can do.
Conclusion: Please be a bit more explicit in your email! Sister S.
